Special exhibition: Important cultural property “Kyozo”
Nishi Honganji Temple’s “Kyozo” is an important cultural property whose interior cannot normally be seen.
The interior will be specially opened to the public on Saturday, September 7, 2024 (Reiwa 6).
Aren’t you worried about the inside of a sutra storehouse where the door is always closed?
Please do not miss this opportunity and visit Honganji Temple.

Inside the “Kyozo”…
Inside the important cultural property “Kyozo” located in the northeast of the Nishi Honganji precincts, there is a statue of the third shogun.
It contains the Tripitaka Sutra, published by Tenkai Sojo, who was a devotee of Tokugawa Iemitsu. It was purchased in September 1648 for 27 kanme of silver (approximately 33.75 million yen in modern terms) at the request of the Edo shogunate and the wishes of Shonin Ryonyo, the 13th head of Honganji Temple.

The Tripitaka Sutra sent from Edo to Kyoto arrived at Hongan-ji Temple in September 1648, but it appears that Ryonyo Shonin was unable to build a sutra storehouse to store it, and the 14th head of Hongan-ji Temple Jakunyo Shonin was entrusted with the will to build it, and construction was completed in 1678.

Inside is an octagonal rotating bookshelf, with scriptures stored in pull-out bookshelves on each side.
Highlights include the wooden structure of Shuanglin Daishifukyu of China, who is said to have proposed the bookshelf, and the Imari ware koshigawara tiles adorning the walls.
