602 elementary school students and their parents participated and learned about the SDGs and the lives of children around the world. Comments such as “It was interesting” and “I want to tell people about it”
*Report on Summer School 2024 hosted by international NGO World Vision Japan* Everyone who participated in “World Vision Summer School 2004″ held in Bunkyo Ward on Saturday, July 27th, one of the three events. *World Vision Japan, an international NGO that supports children around the world (Secretariat: Nakano-ku, Tokyo; Executive Director: Mariko Kiuchi, WVJ)*
has been held every summer since 2009 for elementary school students in the hope that Japanese children will become “global kids” who learn about the issues surrounding children around the world, think about what they can do to solve them, and take action. , is holding the “World Vision Summer School.” This year, we will hold an online event (July 25th (Thursday)) and an in-person event (July 26th (Friday) in Nakano Ward, July 27th (Saturday) in Bunkyo Ward) for elementary school students and their parents. The event was held three times in total, with a total of 274 groups and 602 parents and children participating. We learned about water and sanitation issues faced by children in developing countries and thought about actions we can take. Because WVJ is an international NGO that carries out relief activities around the world, the realistic and rich content that we provide is popular every year, and this year’s in-person event had 12 to 16 times more applications than capacity.

* Face-to-face event held for the first time in four years, with junior high and high school volunteers playing an active role* Face-to-face events, which had been suspended since 2020 to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, were held in Nakano Ward on July 26th (Friday) and in Bunkyo Ward on July 27th (Saturday).
Unfortunately, there were many absentees due to poor health, but 13 people in 6 groups and 25 people in 11 groups participated. Children in developing countries were able to experience drawing water from a tank that is actually used, and children and parents were able to experience the difficulty of drawing water. *
“I thought it would be difficult to walk 6km carrying an 18kg bucket. (In the picture-story show featuring a large photo of a girl from Niger that I introduced at the summer school), I thought it was amazing that a child smaller than me was carrying it.”*
We received comments such as:
For the face-to-face event, eight middle school and high school volunteers made preparations in advance, and on the day of the event, they supported the hands-on activities of the elementary school students and served as receptionists and guides. From our volunteers* We received comments such as “I enjoyed volunteering for the first time,” “I realized how difficult planning is,” and “I learned to be flexible and adapt to the situation.”*
A large photo paper show. Learn about the lives of children in developing countries from the stories of real children that WV meets in the areas where it works.
Experience drawing water using water containers that are actually used in countries in Africa and South Asia, brought back by WVJ staff. Carrying 18kg of water, the same as the girl in Niger is carrying in the picture story show
Try lifting a heavy tank with two people
Children try holding a tank without water on their heads
Junior high school and high school volunteer staff chatting before the event *Virtual tour of Kenyan children’s schools and homes*
At the online event held on July 25th (Thursday), we gave 564 people in 257 groups a simulated experience of traveling to Africa, with fun performances that made it feel like they were actually there. Elementary school students have helped with encounters with wild zebras, children’s two-and-a-half-hour commute to school, and porridge lunches called “Uji”*
We received some surprised comments*. *We also visited the children’s homes and found that there was no electricity, gas, water, or toilets, and there was a great response. *
He also touched on the dangers of using water from brown ponds and the current situation where people are unable to go to school due to time taken away from fetching water, and focused on SDG Goal 6, which is “Safe water and sanitation for all.” I aimed it.

*Virtual lecture and hand washing check by Shionogi & Co.*
Shionogi & Co., Ltd., which is working with WVJ on maternal and child health projects in Kenya, held a virtual lecture at the laboratory during the online event and a “hand washing check” during the in-person event. Both online and in-person, quizzes and explanations about infectious diseases, the correct way to take medicine, and prevention of infectious diseases were introduced. From a parent and child who confirmed that there was no washing left during the hand washing check*
“I thought I was washing my hands properly, but I wasn’t washing my hands properly.”*
We received comments such as: In order to achieve the goal of SDGs Goal 3, “Let everyone live a healthy and happy life,” now is the time to learn and learn how to protect yourself and those around you by washing your hands and taking medicine correctly. I did.

* Actions taken by global kids to cherish their friends around the world * As was common to all three events, World Vision Japan called on participants to take action as global kids. Global Kids is World Vision Japan’s vision for children living in Japan.*
Children* who value their friends around the world, think about what they can do, and are willing to take action.
At the summer school, we introduced the efforts of Mr. Y, who previously participated in the summer school. Mr. Y, who was in the third grade of elementary school at the time, thought, “I want to help children in need!” Instead of receiving money from adults to raise money, he thought about how he could raise money himself. I talked with my family. I then thought of a way to raise money by making accessories and selling them at marches (community events), and that’s what I did. “Adults will not touch or speak,” he promised. In fact, he says he was a little confused because his products didn’t sell as well as he had hoped.
However, instead of having an adult in his family buy the item and solving the problem, he thought about it himself, thinking, “How can I sell more?” “Next time, let’s try this.” I personally transferred the collected money to World Vision Japan from the post office using a transfer form. The way they generate ideas, think about what is necessary to give them shape, and take action is exactly what global kids are like.
* I want to value “I want to know more” and “I want to do something.” Free research sheets and archive videos available*
We have prepared an “independent research sheet” so that you can use what you learned at summer school in your independent research during summer vacation. This content allows you to summarize about safe water and children’s health while looking back on the situation in Kenya that you visited during the virtual tour, and remembering the life of Mahana, who lives in Niger, who was introduced at the in-person event. We also provide reference materials for parents that show examples of how to summarize, so that you can complete your independent research together with your child, and we also release archived videos of the online summer school. We support everyone who wants to learn more or do something using the summer school as an opportunity.
