Merck introduces off-site PPA service, replacing approximately 30% of electricity used in domestic semiconductor-related business with renewable energy
– * Signed a contract with Chubu Electric Power Miraiz to introduce off-site PPA services *
– * Contributing to supporting agricultural management with “farming solar power generation”*
Merck Electronics Co., Ltd. (Representative Director: Nagata) is the Japanese branch of Merck KGaA (hereinafter referred to as Merck), one of the world’s leading science and technology companies.
Katsu, Headquarters: 1-8-1 Shimomeguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as Merck, has announced that Chubu Electric Power Mirize Co., Ltd. (Representative Director: Kamiya)
Yasunori, head office: 1 Higashishinmachi, Higashi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture (hereinafter referred to as Chubu Electric Power Miraiz), has signed a contract to introduce off-site PPA [*1] services.
Based on this service, Chubu Electric Power Miraiz will procure electricity to be generated at Merck’s newly established solar power generation plants (panel output approximately 2,700kW, estimated annual power generation approximately 2.86 million kWh) in Shizuoka and Mie prefectures. , supplies Merck. The power plant is scheduled to begin operation and supply in stages within fiscal 2024, and the electricity supplied will primarily go to Merck’s semiconductor materials business in Japan (located in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, hereinafter referred to as the Shizuoka Office). used. By introducing this service, Merck will replace approximately 2.86 million kWh per year, equivalent to approximately 30% of the electricity used in the development and manufacturing of semiconductor materials in Japan, with renewable energy, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 1,315 tons per year. I’m anticipating that.
Additionally, a portion of the power plant will be equipped with “agricultural solar power generation,” in which crops are grown under the power generation equipment. In addition to selling agricultural products, farm operators can earn income from selling electricity, which also supports agricultural management.
Merck aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions at its facilities by 50% by 2030, in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. Furthermore, the company has announced a 52% reduction in Scope 3 (indirect emissions per euro of added value) by 2030, and by 2030, 80% of the electricity purchased at all of its global sites will be sourced from renewable sources. The plan is to cover this amount with
In Japan, we are already promoting alternatives to renewable energy, such as installing solar panels on the grounds of our Shizuoka office. Going forward, we aim to use renewable energy to cover 80% of the electricity used in our semiconductor-related business in Japan in the future, centered on this off-site PPA service.
[※1] Power Purchase
Abbreviation for Agreement (power purchase agreement). Off-site PPA refers to the purchase of electricity from power generation facilities located in remote locations off-site.
