About Bernard Buffet
Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) used black lines and subdued colors to depict the anxiety and emptiness that followed World War II, and his work resonated with people around the world. His unpretentious depictions of people were seen as the embodiment of Sartre’s existentialism and Camus’ ideas of absurdity, which had a great influence on young people at the time, and created a sensation. Buffet, who became the standard-bearer of the figurative art world, was called the neo-figurative school or homtemoin (witness), along with Bernard Lorge and André Minault, and was frequently introduced in Japan in the mid-1950s.
The Japanese art world was in the midst of a heyday of abstract painting, and many artists were shocked by Buffet’s black straight lines and strong expressions. More than half a century has passed since then, but Buffet’s presence in the modern art scene remains strong.
