Future” is the brand name for horizontal recycling developed by Unicharm. In order to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, we are working on recycling with the aim of creating a future where used paper pants are no longer thrown away.
* -Background of the initiative-*
On April 2, 2018, we entered into a four-party agreement with Osaki Town, Kagoshima Prefecture, Shibushi City, Unicharm Corporation, and Soo Recycling Center Ltd., and from August 1, 2019, in Shibushi City, and from February 2020. On the 1st, Unicharm began a “disposable diaper separation test collection” in Osaki Town that utilizes the world’s first technology to extract and recycle the pulp from used disposable diapers.
Initially, only used human disposable diapers (including those for adults and children), urine pads, and wet tissues were collected in “general garbage bags,” and from April 2024, “disposable diapers (paper pants)” were collected. ) Use a special designated bag. The collected paper diapers are washed and separated at the Soo Recycling Center, and the extracted pulp is subjected to a unique ozone treatment to kill bacteria contained in excrement, making it as hygienic and safe as unused pulp. producing pulp.
According to an announcement by the Ministry of the Environment, the proportion of disposable diapers in general waste will be 6.6% to 7.1% in 2030*2. Approximately 20% by weight of the garbage collected at the shared landfill site between Osaki Town and Shibushi City is disposable diapers. Against this backdrop of waste treatment, we are working to promote horizontal recycling of disposable diapers with the aim of further extending the lifespan of landfill sites.

In 2022, Osaki Town and Shibushi City will be selected as eligible organizations for the Ministry of the Environment’s Diaper Survey Cost Subsidy, and collection boxes exclusively for disposable diapers will be placed at garbage stations. Using this subsidy, we aim to improve the collection rate of disposable diapers and promote resource recycling by distributing disposable diaper collection bags in model regions.
