“Nameless housework” is hard… Are you making it a little easier by storing things and making your room?
When we think of “housework,” we tend to think of things like cooking, laundry, and cleaning, but in reality, there are countless more detailed “nameless household chores.” During summer vacation, when families are often at home, many people may find that their household chores increase instead of progressing. Therefore, this time we conducted a questionnaire survey on “devices to reduce the burden of unnamed housework”. Reducing the burden of housework makes daily life easier. Let’s explore some tips to lighten the burden of nameless household chores.
“Nameless housework” is troublesome…
This survey was conducted among people living all over the country, and we will mainly analyze the results in the Kanto region (36.3%), where the number of respondents was particularly high.
Unlike “typical housework” such as cooking and laundry, “nameless housework” is housework that is so detailed that it is difficult to list it and does not even have a name.
In this survey, approximately 80% of respondents (75.2% in the Kanto region, 76.0% nationwide) were aware of “unknown housework,” and although more and more people are paying attention to how difficult it is, there is still a lack of awareness about “nameless housework.” Many people may be worried about fatigue and strain.
Sometimes it is preparation and assistance work for typical housework, such as “replenishing detergent” and “removing dust from the washing machine.”
At other times, it is a task to ensure that daily life activities proceed smoothly, such as “opening the package of sweets that the child was unable to open” or “setting the garbage bag in the trash can.”
Sometimes, it is a task that is done secretly and flexibly according to the situation, such as “throwing out trash that was left behind and forgotten” or “managing leftovers from meals.”
Nameless housework is difficult to turn into routine work, and tasks occur one after another in daily life, and they are often dealt with on the spot (sometimes by interrupting work), and even if each task is simple, it is necessary to do various tasks. This takes time and effort, and many people may find it more difficult than doing typical housework.
In the survey, we asked whether people found “nameless housework” a chore. In this survey, approximately 70% of people nationwide (69.0% in the Kanto region and 69.3% nationwide) answered that they find “nameless housework” a chore.
By region in the Kanto region, the highest percentages were within the 23 wards of Tokyo (75.0%), the coastal area of Chiba Prefecture (75.0%), and outside the 23 wards of Tokyo (74.1%).
Looking at the type of living environment in the Kanto region (houses, condominiums, apartments, etc.), the highest percentage was found in condominiums for singles (83.3%) and condominiums for families (74.6%).

Things that feel troublesome due to “nameless housework”
The next question in the survey asked respondents what “nameless housework” they found troublesome.
[Cleaning] is 3 items in the top 5
Let’s take a look at the top 10 out of the countless nameless household chores of various genres.
What was unique was that 3 of the top 5 items in Kanto were related to housework related to cleaning.
[Cleaning-related housework in Kanto top 5]
– Clean up whenever there is a mess (2nd in Kanto / 59.0%, 1st in Japan / 69.2%)
– Remove dust when you notice it (3rd in Kanto area/57.0%, 5th in Japan/56.8%)
– Tidying up (5th place in Kanto/55.0%, 7th place in Japan/50.9%)
Cleaning can be said to be the work of “returning something to its original clean state”, or in other words, “returning a dirty or messy state to zero”.
In addition, in the case of family living, it is something that can be done with the cooperation of the family, and “the burden is reduced if the person who used the item cleans it themselves” and “the burden can be distributed if the person who notices it is the one who did it.”
If these nameless household chores are becoming a burden, you will need to reconsider whether the work is concentrated on a specific person and whether you are able to take care of yourself.
If you live alone, it may be difficult, but you can reduce the burden of housework by “cleaning up after every use,” “not leaving things as they are,” and “not accumulating things to do.”
There are many other household chores that can be brought back to zero. In addition to cleaning, many other “household chores that can be reduced to zero” made the list.
[“Housework that returns to zero” in the Kanto top 10]
– [Laundry] Undo the inside-out (3rd place in Kanto/57.0%, 3rd place in Japan/54.8%)
– [Laundry] Take in and fold (6th in Kanto / 50.0%, 4th in Japan / 55.7%) – [Meals] Put away washed dishes (8th place in Kanto area/43.6%, 8th place in Japan/48.6%)
– [Laundry] Stocking and refilling detergent (9th in Kanto/42.0%, 9th in Japan/45.0%)
The results show that a large number of nameless household chores are returned to the state before they were used, that is, to zero. And here too, there were many things that families could do together. For example, “putting things back inside out” is a task similar to “stockpiling and refilling detergent” because it is less burdensome for the wearer to put the clothes back on themselves, rather than taking them off and putting them inside out in the laundry. Life can go smoothly if people who are aware of these things, such as “stocking up and refilling shampoo, body soap, etc.” and “stocking up and replacing toilet paper,” take the initiative.
There are other unnamed chores to get back to zero, such as “putting things back where they were left out,” “sorting shoes at the entrance, and putting away unused shoes,” including “family members should do it themselves.” It turns out that there are many
“housework tasks that no longer require work” and “housework tasks that people who are aware of can do.”
Why is “nameless housework” so troublesome?
Next, we conducted a survey asking respondents about the main reasons why they find “nameless housework” a chore.
The detail and abundance unique to “nameless housework”
The rankings are the same for both the Kanto region and the country, with the most common answer being “It’s a little thing and it’s a pain (Kanto 39.8%, nationwide 37.5%),” and the second place “Too much to do (Kanto 32.0%, nationwide 36.1%).” )” are the unique characteristics of housework.
By region in the Kanto region, “It’s a small thing so it’s a hassle” was found in Tokyo’s 23 wards (51.4%) and southern Saitama Prefecture (50.0%), while “Too much to do” was found in northern Chiba Prefecture (60.0%) and Chiba Prefecture’s Gulf Coast. (57.1%).
Each task is a detailed task, but if you don’t finish it, you won’t be able to do the next thing, or even if you want to do something else, you’ll have to deal with it right away, or if you put it off until later, you’ll end up forgetting it. The unnamed housework is complicated and difficult because there are so many of them. Unable to get support from family
The keyword for third and fourth place was “family cooperation.”
The third place was “My family doesn’t notice and don’t cooperate (Kanto 20.4%, nationwide 16.5%),” and the fourth place was “Even if I ask my family, it’s half-hearted (Kanto 5.8%, nationwide 8.1%).” ” was.
By region in the Kanto region, “My family doesn’t notice and don’t cooperate” was in the 23 wards of Tokyo (25.7%) and southern Saitama Prefecture (25.0%), and “Even if I asked my family, they would be half-hearted” in Chiba. The percentage was high in the prefecture’s bay area (28.0%).
Unlike typical housework such as cooking and laundry, unnamed housework often requires immediate action based on judgment based on the situation, and there are cases where it is difficult to decide or communicate work details and arrangements.
Because the work is detailed, it is difficult to ask family members to do the work, and they may feel that it is faster to do it themselves than to tell them how to do it and ask them to do it.
In addition to the main work itself, nameless housework may include additional work that is necessary.
For example, I asked a family member to refill my detergent, and although I was able to refill it,
– The container is left in its original position without being returned to its original position.
– Even if it spills when refilling, you won’t notice it and it will stay there.
– I have finished using the refill pack, but they do not notify me.
In the end, the follow-up work ends up being left unfinished and leaves a feeling of confusion, and when I point it out, it often happens that they get in a bad mood and say, “I helped them.” .
Additionally, even if you ask your family to do the work themselves to reduce the amount of work they have to do, such as “cleaning up a mess every time” or “returning the laundry inside out,” it seems that they often find it difficult to do so.
Some parts may be difficult for small children, but I’ve heard some people complain that adults aren’t willing to do it.
* ■User’s Voice*
There are too many housework tasks to do, so I want the whole family to work together and get into the habit of doing it whenever they feel like it.
(40s, full-time housewife)
To be frank, there are far more “nameless housework” than ordinary housework, and they are far more tiring.
(50s, full-time housewife)
Even if you ask your family, they can only help you with the main state, so in the end everyone ends up helping out. It’s frustrating because it gives off that habitual feeling.
(40s, nurse)
I hate that there are families who notice it but leave it as it is because it’s bothersome.
(40s, self-employed)
The one who notices loses. People who don’t realize this only try to do what they are told at the time.
(50s, full-time housewife)
Families who don’t do any “nameless housework” say, “Maybe you shouldn’t force yourself to do it,” but I want them to realize that that’s not how they do their daily lives.
(50s, self-employed)
Can “nameless housework” be made easier by improving storage and housework guidance?
We found that in order to reduce the burden of household chores, in addition to being diligent and not accumulating them, many people feel that cooperation from family members is essential when living with a family, but it is quite difficult to do so.
If someone who notices that something needs to be done is willing to clean up and clean up after using it, the burden of anonymous housework will be greatly reduced.
However, as many people said, “Even if you ask your family, it will be half-hearted,” and you can know where things are and where they should be stored without having to ask anyone. Moreover, the reality is that unless you are able to work smoothly on your own, it will be difficult for your family to cooperate and complete the work yourself.
Therefore, in our survey, we asked people whether they thought “nameless household chores” could be made easier if they organized their storage methods and household chores.
In this survey, a total of about 90% (86.0% in the Kanto region and 86.7% nationwide) answered that they thought that household chores would be made easier if they organized storage methods and housework lines.
The breakdown is
– I think it will be easier if I organize my storage methods and housework: Kanto 27.2%, Nationwide 19.4%
– Some thoughts: Kanto 58.8%, Nationwide 67.3%
That was the result.
By region in the Kanto region, those who answered that they thought it would be easier if they organized their storage methods and household chores were 91.7% outside the 23 wards of Tokyo, the coastal area of Chiba prefecture (85.7%), and the southern part of Saitama prefecture (84.6%). %).
Looking at the type of living environment in Kanto (single-family houses, condominiums, apartments, etc.), the percentage was high for detached houses (90.0%) and family condominiums (84.0%).

What I keep in mind to make “nameless housework” easier
In the survey, we asked if there are any things that you keep in mind, such as storing and organizing, to make your “nameless housework” easier.
In this survey, about 60% (63.4%) of people in the Kanto region and about 50% (54.9%) of people nationwide answered that they try to keep things organized and organized to make their “nameless housework” easier. %).
By region in the Kanto region, the highest percentage was within the 23 wards of Tokyo (77.8%) and outside the 23 wards of Tokyo (69.6%), and when looking at the type of living environment (house,
condominium, apartment, etc.), the proportion was high for families. The percentage was high for residential apartments (77.1%) and family apartments (75.0%).
[Top 3 things I keep in mind when storing and organizing things to make “nameless housework” easier]
(Same ranking in Kanto and nationwide)
No. 1: Storage that makes it easy to see where everything is (Kanto 65.3%. Nationwide 65.4%)
2nd place: Don’t leave things out that you don’t use regularly (44.4% in Kanto, 51.6% nationwide)
3rd place: Creating a room that is easy to clean (36.1% in Kanto, 31.3% nationwide)
I found that everyone in the family is creating a habit of keeping items in a place where they can easily see where things are, making it easy to put things out and put them away, and putting them away after using them and not leaving them out.
In order to make it easy for family members to know the proper location of things and to make it easy to put things in and take them out, it is necessary to have spacious and compartmentalized storage. However, many people worry that the storage space is full and it is difficult to know where things are, or that it is difficult to put them back after use. In such cases, it is convenient to utilize the trunk room to eliminate the lack of storage space.
When considering the use of a trunk room to create storage that makes it easy to see the correct location of things,
– By using an indoor trunk-type trunk room, you can store your items in a safe storage environment as an extension of your home’s storage space.
– You can secure storage space at a reasonable price by choosing the size that fits your needs (not too big) from a variety of trunk sizes.
–
By storing items that you don’t use immediately, such as off-season clothing, bedding, and home appliances, in the trunk room, you can free up storage space at home and store items that you will use immediately.
– By creating easy-to-use storage that makes it easy for everyone in the family to understand the proper location of items, it becomes easier for family members to work and clean up on their own. –
By creating an environment that is less messy and easier to clean up, it becomes easier for family members to work together to maintain a clean home environment, and as a result, the burden of anonymous housework can be reduced.
–
Even “nameless household chores” other than cleaning and tidying up, such as refilling detergent and storing folded laundry, will be easier to do together if you have an environment where you know where things are and where it’s easy to put them in and take them out. There is an advantage.
By creating a well-organized and user-friendly storage environment, it becomes easier for families to organize their home environment independently.

This time, we talked about “devices to reduce the burden of unnamed housework” based on the survey results.
Approximately 70% of people found unnamed housework to be a chore, indicating that many people find cleaning, tidying up, and “housework back to zero” difficult.
Nameless housework involves many detailed tasks, and it tends to be difficult to get cooperation from family members. If all family members could take initiative, such as cleaning up after using something, the burden of unnamed household chores would be greatly reduced.
In order to make it easier for family members to clean up, organize, etc., and to divide up household chores, it is effective to create a storage environment that makes it easy to see where things are and put them in and take them out.
When you want to create a spacious storage environment for the things you need for daily life, why not take advantage of the trunk room, where you can easily add storage space?
