Sales of rice, which has become a hot topic due to shortages being called the “Rice Rebellion of Reiwa,” increased by 31.1% at food supermarkets compared to the same month last year, and by 48.4% at drugstores. New rice, which will start appearing on supermarket shelves from September onwards, may be sold at higher prices than usual, so future consumption trends will be closely watched.

Sales of rice increased significantly. Sales at food supermarkets increased by 31.1% compared to the same month last year, and sales at drugstores increased by 48.4%. Rice prices are rising due to production adjustments, supply shortages due to last summer’s heat wave, and increased inbound demand. Sales volume also increased by 9.0% at food supermarkets compared to the same month last year, and by 20.1% at drugstores.
In July, which was extremely hot, sales of antiperspirant and deodorant for men at drugstores increased by 17.6% compared to the same month last year. Looking at the sales ranking of “antiperspirant and deodorant for men”, the top 10 products are all sweat wipe sheets. Amid record-breaking heat, demand for sweat prevention products appears to be increasing.
In hot weather, people tend to avoid dishes that require a long fire, so sales of instant soups, Chinese food bases, and cup noodles, which allow meals to be prepared in a short amount of time, increased. At food supermarkets, sales of “instant soup” increased by 8.0% compared to the same month last year, and sales of “Chinese cooking
ingredients” increased by 7.9%. At drugstores, sales of “cup noodles” increased by 3.8%.
At food supermarkets, sales of “toy sweets” increased by 23.5% compared to the same month last year, and the number of items sold increased by 18.4%. “Bandai” released on July 22nd
