Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo/President Nobuo Domae) will open “MUJI Karatsu” (Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture) on Friday, September 6th, and “MUJI Hita” on Friday, September 27th. ” (Hita City, Oita Prefecture) will open. It is MUJI’s first store built in a wooden structure, and the first large-scale wooden store in Japan to receive ZEB certification*1. *2 Additionally, we have concluded “cooperation agreements for local disaster prevention” with Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, and Hita City, Oita Prefecture, and will contribute to improving local disaster prevention capabilities. ■Creating an environment where all three generations can shop together and a place for interaction
The area surrounding “MUJI Karatsu” and “MUJI Hita” is home to many people of three generations *3, and is an area where interaction between generations is active. MUJI has continued to operate in these areas for 20 to 30 years, making people living in Karatsu City and Hita City want to continue living in these areas. By creating a shopping environment and a place for interaction that will make future generations proud to live in each city, we aim to create a place for interaction that transcends generations.
■Muji’s first wooden building store, Japan’s first large-scale wooden building to receive ZEB certification
Ryohin Keikaku is a wooden Ramen structure with excellent earthquake resistance that was designed by group company MUJI HOUSE Co., Ltd. (Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo/President Nobuo Domae) and is also used in “MUJI House.” In addition to realizing a large-scale wooden store using the SE construction method, we also achieved a ZEB rating by combining energy-saving and energy-creating technologies.
The total amount of energy required is reduced through the use of wooden roofs and exterior walls that include high-performance insulation materials, and highly efficient air conditioning equipment that can optimally manage ventilation and temperature using motion/CO2 sensors. At the same time, by utilizing solar power generation and storage batteries to generate energy for use within the facility, we will achieve zero primary energy consumption*4 in each store space. Details of the “ZEB” wooden store architecture are available on the website below.
https://www.muji.net/ie/business/catalog/pdf/mujihouse_ZEB_202404.pdf Additionally, MUJI’s wooden stores can reduce CO2 emissions in the manufacturing of materials by 44%*5 compared to MUJI’s conventional steel-framed stores. In addition, the entire lifecycle (excluding the use stage), including material manufacturing, construction, repair, disposal, and recycling, can be reduced by 35%*5 compared to conventional steel-reinforced stores.
■Providing disaster prevention equipment
Ryohin Keikaku concluded a “Collaboration Agreement on Regional Disaster Prevention” with Karatsu City and Hita City on August 1st (Thursday). MUJI Karatsu and MUJI Hita will provide the disaster prevention equipment installed at each store in the event of a disaster in each city. In the event of a disaster, we will strive to restore store operations and quickly set up a system where each citizen can purchase store products.
-Disaster prevention equipment introduction-
1. Furnace bench
It has a seat board placed on the base of a brick enclosure, and is normally used as a bench, but it can also be used as a “hearth” in the event of a disaster. The MUJI Hita oven bench was made with the children of Hikuma Elementary School. Production details can be found in the MUJI HOUSE news release.

Equipped with a manhole toilet that can be directly connected to the sewer system, the toilet function can be quickly secured in the event of a disaster.

Charging station for electronic communication devices for disaster victims Solar panels have been installed on the roofs of each store, and in the event of a disaster, stations can be set up to charge smartphones and other devices.

nature-symbiotic, and sustainable society” as one of its important issues. For this reason, each store will be selling “ReMUJI” *6 products, which are made from reused and recycled clothes, for a limited time after opening *7. We will also collect used books, which will be donated to child support facilities in Karatsu City and Hita City.

From the perspective of local communication through wood and environmental considerations, we use wood from Kyushu for parts of the store’s interior, rest areas, etc. Additionally, some of the benches in the store are made from stumps and logs from Karatsu City and Hita City.

Of these, ZEB consumes the least amount of energy. This certification is a performance evaluation
certification under the BELS (Building Energy Efficiency Labeling System), and the two properties obtained this certification on January 10, 2024.
*2 This is the first wooden building in Japan based on data published by the Housing Performance Evaluation and Indication Association (as of May 1, 2024) and a large-scale building with a total floor area of 2,000 square meters or more.
*3 Based on Jstat statistical information, compared with the population of the same size that has opened stores in the Kyushu region, calculated as “Number of general households – Number of single-person households – Number of nuclear family households = 3 households”
*4 The value of the energy of equipment such as air conditioning, lighting, and elevators converted into heat.
*5 Simple calculation results by NCN Co., Ltd. using CO2 calculation software “One Click LCA.” These are provisional values and may be revised in the future. Reduction rate is per square meter of building. *6 ReMUJI is an initiative that collects MUJI clothing that customers have loved for many years, reuses and upcycles it, and passes it on to the next person. Since 2015, we have been selling “re-dyed clothes” that have been re-dyed in indigo or black to give them new value. Starting in 2021, we will launch multiple “connected clothes,” in which clothes are connected and remade to create new clothes, and “rewashed clothes,” in which clothes made from materials that cannot be dyed are rewashed and resold as used clothing. Sold at stores. -ReMUJI Please check the details below-
