The natural environment around us can sometimes bring about unexpected events. In recent years, natural phenomena such as earthquakes, heavy rain, and typhoons have been observed in various parts of Japan, and they have had an impact on our lives.
Based on recent experiences such as the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in January 2024 and the earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of less than 6 that occurred in Hyuga-nada off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture on August 8, 2024, our society has become more focused on disaster prevention and mitigation. Its importance is once again gaining attention.
In particular, after the earthquake off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, the “Nankai Trough Earthquake Temporary Information (Warning for Huge Earthquake)” was announced, further increasing the importance of disaster prevention awareness.
Under these circumstances, we wanted to gain a deeper understanding of disaster prevention measures for families with babies, who are especially important to them.
Families who have welcomed a new family member and are struggling to raise their children on a daily basis may not have the time to even think about how to prepare.
Therefore, we conducted a survey targeting mothers with babies under 2 years old about their thoughts on daily “preparation”, their actual situation, and their impressions of gifts related to “preparation” as baby gifts. .
We hope that this survey, which will be conducted in conjunction with Disaster Prevention Day on September 1st, will provide an opportunity for families with babies to think about “preparedness” once again.
We hope that this will serve as a small opportunity to raise awareness of the safety and security of babies throughout society.
*Survey results*
First, we investigated how the birth of a baby affects mothers’ sense of crisis regarding disasters.
Compared to before the baby was born, 35.1% of moms answered that their awareness of disasters had “much increased,” and 44.0% answered that they had “slightly increased.”
* In total, 79.1% of mothers feel that their sense of crisis has increased after the birth of their baby.
On the other hand, 15.6% of moms answered “Neither”, 3.1% said “It didn’t increase much,” and 2.3% said “It didn’t increase at all.”
These results clearly show that the birth of a baby is a major trigger for mothers with babies under 2 to change their awareness of disasters.
It is particularly important that approximately one-third of mothers answered that their sense of crisis had “extremely increased.” This is thought to be because the awareness of disasters has changed dramatically due to the need to protect not only oneself but also the safety of one’s baby.
Overall, the results clearly show that the birth of a baby is an important trigger for raising disaster prevention awareness.
Next, we also investigated *the current state of disaster prevention measures for babies*.
According to the survey, *34.7%* of mothers answered that they were able to take disaster prevention measures for their babies.
On the other hand, *65.3%* of mothers answered that they were not able to do so.
In other words, *more than 2 out of 3 mothers feel that they are not prepared for disaster prevention for their babies*.
The results of the previous question showed that many mothers answered that their awareness of disasters increased after the birth of their baby, but many families still have a long way to go to take actual disaster prevention measures.
Behind this result may be the struggle of mothers to start a new life with their babies.
It is also possible that you are busy with childcare and housework, and are unable to take care of disaster prevention measures. Although many mothers are aware of the importance of disaster prevention, the fact that the actual preparations have yet to begin indicates that there is a high demand for easy-to-use disaster prevention goods and appropriate advice.
Based on the results of the previous survey, we found that many families said they were not sufficiently prepared with emergency supplies for their babies.
Based on these results, we asked mothers with babies under 2 years old if they had ever received a baby gift that they had trouble using.
According to the survey, *50.1% of moms answered “Yes” and 49.9% answered “No.”*
In other words, it turns out that *almost half of mothers have had trouble using baby gifts*.
Although it is nice to receive a baby gift, it seems that there are many cases where the gift does not match the needs of the recipient.
For example, you may find that similar baby clothes overlap, don’t fit well, or don’t suit your family’s tastes.
The fact that half of mothers have had trouble using them shows the need to consider something more practical and versatile when choosing baby gifts.
Especially when babies are growing quickly, they are likely to appreciate consumables, things that can be used for a long time, and things that can be used by the whole family.
Finally, we conducted a survey to find out how people would feel if they received a baby gift, which can also be used as a disaster prevention measure for babies.
As a result of the survey, 37.9% of moms answered “very happy” and 39.1% answered “somewhat happy.”*
In total, it was found that 77.0% of mothers have a positive view of baby gifts that can also be used as disaster prevention measures.
On the other hand, 14.7% were “neutral,” 6.4% were “not very happy,” and 1.9% were “not happy at all.”
This result shows that many moms want gifts that are practical and directly connected to safety.
Especially considering that in the previous question, half of the mothers answered that they have had trouble using baby gifts, it can be said that disaster prevention gifts have great potential as a new option for baby gifts.
