◆Summary On August 8, 2024, National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) will hold a public symposium “One Health – Future “Thinking with the Creating Generation” was co-hosted at the Co-Education and Co-Creation Commons (OUX) on the University’s Tsushima Campus, with about 80 people participating on-site (face-to-face) and about 150 people participating in the webinar (online).
The theme of this symposium is “One Health,” which means that “human health,” “animal health,” and “environmental health” are closely related to each other, similar to “planetary health,” which our university has a mission to realize. This is the concept that lies at the root of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speakers from our university include Associate Professor Kumiko Tsujimoto (Faculty of Environmental, Life and Natural Sciences), Lecturer Yota Maki (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Okayama University Hospital), and Associate Professor Yuko Kataoka (Hearing Support Center, Okayama University Hospital). Appeared as. Associate Professor Tsujimoto will discuss “Water disasters and food issues under climate change,” Lecturer Maki will discuss “Efforts to revitalize communities that make it easier to give birth and raise children using digital technology,” and Associate Professor Kataoka will discuss “To create a world without barriers.” They each gave a lecture on Okayama region’s efforts to support the hearing-impaired. Next, Deputy Director and Vice President Mitsunobu Kano served as the moderator, and six speakers and three students from our university (Mr. Takuya Nakazawa (Doctoral Program, Graduate School of Health System Integrative Sciences), Ms. Ayuha Miyamoto (Graduate School of Social and Cultural Sciences) participated). A panel discussion was held with the participation of Mr. Shota Morimoto (Department of Health Sciences, School of Medicine).
Students asked, “What should young people who don’t have specialized knowledge about climate issues, etc., do when they want to take action?” and “If junior high and high school students want to know specialized knowledge, how can they access it?” There were questions such as “Is it better?” The speakers also said, “Opportunities like this one to have discussions with young people are very valuable. We can gain perspectives that we are not aware of.As the Science Council of Japan, we not only communicate what we should be. One commenter said, “My role may be to get students interested in academics by answering their questions.”
This symposium was a good opportunity for participants to gain access to specialized knowledge, with one student panelist saying, “The discussions made me feel closer to researchers.” Please look forward to the continued efforts of Okayama University, a regional core and distinctive research university.
