◆Overview
Daisuke Uchida, Lecturer (specially appointed), Professor Jun Sakurai, Director Yoshinobu Maeda of the Okayama University Hospital New Medical Research and Development Center, National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu), have so far Based on Okayama University’s track record of medical device development support and startup support, we are planning a “regional industry promotion project using the BIZEN ecosystem,” and as of June 25, 2024, we will be working with the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), a national research and development agency. was selected for the “Project to Strengthen Industrial Promotion Centers Related to the Creation of Excellent Medical Devices (Startup Support Strengthening Frame)”.
In order to establish a system that can create innovative medical devices in Japan, this project will develop and reskill human resources in the medical device industry, create highly skilled human resources who have a consistent understanding of medical device creation, and start medical device startups. The purpose is to create a base where businesses can be promoted. Seven facilities, including our university, were selected.
Okayama University has been selected for the AMED Next Generation Medical Device Collaboration Center Development Project
(FY2019-FY2023), and has been running the open innovation program BIZEN (Business Innovation Zone for Entrepreneurship), which aims to develop human resources for medical device development and create startups. has been maintained. Our university’s open innovation goal is to build a medical device development ecosystem centered on this program. BIZEN will play a central role in establishing a development and commercialization scheme that performs appropriate core management according to the characteristics and stage of the project, and will enable projects to advance from Okayama to the world through commercialization and start-up from medical device development. We will foster this and lead to the revitalization of local industry. Furthermore, last year, our university was selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Regional Core and Distinctive Research Universities Promotion Project (J-PEAKS)” (implemented by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science), and is engaged in research and innovation activities aimed at social change. We are implementing this strategically. In particular, transforming society through the development of innovative medical and healthcare technologies is one of the important missions of Okayama University Hospital and its medical departments. The selection for the project (startup support reinforcement framework) will further accelerate J-PEAKS’ activities.
We will continue to promote initiatives that utilize the functions of our bases to address various issues surrounding medical healthcare.
