*Hidewa System Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Chairman and President: Tomokazu Ueda) will publish a new book, “OSC Chronicle,” on September 3, 2024. *
The Open Source Conference is an event held by communities and companies involved in open source software, and has been held for 20 years since the first one in September 2004, including when it was held online during the coronavirus pandemic. It has been held over 230 times across the country.
In Part 1, we look back on the 20 years of OSC, including an explanation of OSC and open source. Part 2 explains the original purpose of OSC and touches on specific results. In Part 3, we will discuss what constitutes a sustainable community, with a focus on community management that has changed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Part 4 looks back on the memories of OSC held in each region, and features contributions from 17 people from various communities as “OSC and Me.” Part 5 is an “OSC manual” from each perspective, but it is a collection of 20 years of know-how, so it should be useful for various event management.
In addition, Ruby developer Yukihiro Matsumoto wrote the following suspiciously wonderful introduction to the book’s obi.
* OSC, which fostered Japanese open source. The fixer (mastermind) talks about it all! *
Author Toru Miyahara has the following to say about the publication of this book:
*
We will look back on OSC’s progress over the past 20 years and think about the nature of the community. In addition, we have put together a manual of the work we do to hold an OSC, which was not well
documented, so it will be useful not only for the OSC but also for holding your own events. *
This book was written not only to look back on 20 years of history, but also to create a new OSC based on that history. This book, which thoroughly describes OSC’s history and accumulated know-how, will be useful for community management and event holdings other than OSC. ○ Table of contents
