About the TVCM “Life is just one chance. Entebbe, Uganda” version * ■Alice Hirose visits Uganda, Africa and becomes a JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers environmental education member! *

This commercial is a continuation of the Ubon-Bangkok version shot in Thailand for recruitment in the fall of 2023, and features Hirose visiting Entebbe, Uganda as a member of the JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers to convey the appeal of the JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.
This time, we experienced the job of an environmental education volunteer. The story begins with Mr. Hirose saying, “I’ve come to Entebbe!” while feeding the local giraffes.
Afterwards, Mr. Hirose greeted the children in the local language of Uganda (Luganda), and while Mr. Hirose seemed to be having fun making a Japanese flag with the local children out of plastic bottle caps, his expression suddenly changed to a serious one. You can also see them picking up trash on the beach. In the second half, you can see them playing with the playground equipment in the park and having fun with the children.
Also, like last time, with the theme “Life is just one opportunity”, The content is intended to support those who are considering applying to JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers. Through Hirose’s activities with the Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, this commercial will provide an opportunity for people who want to take a step forward if they are thinking, “I want to change something about myself” or “I want to try something exciting.” Please take a look.

Shooting episode
Africa’s largest lake in Entebbe
The shoot began with Hirose’s cheerful greeting, “Thank you for your support!” in front of Lake Victoria, and the shoot was held in a lively atmosphere from beginning to end.
The first day of filming started with a scene in which Mr. Hirose was walking with members of the Overseas Cooperation Volunteers in the morning light by the lake.
They visited the Uganda Wildlife Conservation and Education Center, also known as the Entebbe Zoo, and interacted with giraffes, and went out into the city to shop at the market. They seemed to be enjoying Entebbe to the fullest. Mr. Hirose, who is an incomparable animal lover, experienced feeding giraffes. At first, I was a little surprised by the giraffe approaching, but as I gradually got used to it, it didn’t faze me even at close range, and I reached out my hand to feed it, enjoying the close contact with animals that is rarely experienced in Japan. He seemed to be the most excited.
Mr. Hirose moves to the market in town and shows interest in unusual shops that are unique to the area. When Hirose ate local pineapple, he exclaimed, “It’s the best I’ve ever had!” and started dancing because of the deliciousness, making for a fun scene that made everyone laugh. Also, unlike the pineapples normally eaten in Japan, Mr. Hirose was so impressed with Ugandan pineapples that he was researching whether there was a way to eat Ugandan pineapples in Japan.
On the second day,
Filming for the “Jinja” version, scheduled to be released in the spring of 2024, has begun at Nile Bridge, a new symbol of Uganda that was built with the cooperation of JICA. In the scene where he danced with local children and members of the team, Mr. Hirose did his best, jumping up and down as the children chanted “Jumping!” in sync with the children. Mr. Hirose was very impressive, involving not only the staff but also the local people and creating a sense of unity at the filming site.

Interview with Alice Hirose
* Q: Please give us your honest impressions after filming. *

It went by so quickly. I visited Uganda this time thinking that I would be able to learn a lot of things.Although the schedule was quite tight for two days and it must have been difficult, each cut was full of good stimulation and I was genuinely happy. I was able to enjoy that time.

* Q: I think there was a lot of interaction with local people and interactions with animals, but could you tell us about any memorable scenes? *

I was able to get up close to animals and have proper conversations with children. I don’t get to experience it very often in my normal life, so it really gave me pure power and left a very deep impression on me.

* Q: I heard that this is your first time landing on the African continent. Please tell us your impressions of your first visit to Uganda. *
* Also, did your impressions change after coming? *

I just thought it was a country I really liked. I have only been in Uganda for a few days, so I may have only seen the good things, but I still think that the cheerfulness and frankness of the Ugandan people is wonderful. When filming overseas, there is always a language barrier, so I don’t have many opportunities to talk to local people, but I was very impressed by how the Ugandan people talked to me a lot even when I was having trouble answering the questions. It was. That was the first day and I was saved anyway.

Before coming here, I had the impression that there was a lot of nature. Of course, that’s part of it, but this time, I was able to go to schools, experience various things with volunteer team members, talk with them, and see their activities firsthand. I thought there were a lot of them.
I could really feel my desire and desire to make things even better than the current situation, even if just a little.

* Q: Overseas Cooperation Volunteers have over 180 job categories and work in a variety of fields. If you were to become an Overseas Cooperation Volunteer, where and what kind of work would you like to do?
*

Children’s education, poverty issues, and animals. When I visited Uganda this time, what I saw firsthand on the ground made me want to create more places where children and young people can study. I was listening to a lot of stories, and I heard that up until now, it had almost never been the case for girls to participate in physical education classes. this time,
Mr. Watanabe, a member of the JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, served as a class teacher and physical education teacher, and he said that it was a revolution when both boys and girls danced. At this site, I experienced a moment when physical education was not what we thought it was, and I wanted to do something to help children from all countries receive equal access to learning.
