Sukedachi Research Institute announces survey on mid-career
recruitment in the construction industry
* Sukedachi Co., Ltd. (located in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo), which operates the matching platform “Sukedachi” that supports all people working in the construction industry.
Sukedachi Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as “Sukedachi Research Institute”), operated by the “Company”), is conducting a mid-career recruitment survey for construction business operators who have a track record of mid-career recruitment activities in the past year. We conducted a survey on the following. We have now released the survey results report and would like to provide you with an overview. *

* ■Survey overview *
Survey method: Web questionnaire survey within the “Sukedachi” app Survey target: Of the 313 construction companies that responded to the survey using the “Sukedachi” app,
172 employees who have been involved in recruitment and practitioner Implementation period: June 24, 2024 to July 31, 2024
Implementing entity: Sukedachi Research Institute
* ■Survey results *
1.
The most common reason for mid-career hiring was “to increase orders” at 73.3%, and while strong construction demand is expected to continue, work style reforms and the 2024 problem “to reduce employee working hours” were the most common reason. 28.5% also cited a high number of reasons for responding to this issue.
2.
Regarding the number of mid-career hires in the past year, 94% said they were unable to hire three or fewer people, and 43% said they were unable to hire any people. Considering that 80% of respondents to this survey were businesses with 20 or fewer employees, it can be seen that small businesses have a high degree of difficulty in recruiting. 3.
The most common recruitment route was “through personal
connections” at 61%, followed by “Hello Work” at 49%, and “job advertisement” at 31%. Only 13% of skilled workers in the
construction industry use recruitment agencies, partly because recruitment is prohibited by the Employment Security Act.
4.
The effective recruitment measures were “hiring with no
experience,” “direct return,” “salary level,” “improvement of leave,” and “improvement of dormitory/housing allowance.” Companies that are successful in hiring have higher results than those that are not, and it appears that companies that are improving pay, benefits, and work styles are making progress in hiring.
* ■Summary *
Due to the serious labor shortage in the construction industry, it is becoming more difficult to recruit compared to other industries, so we conducted a survey to clarify the recruitment situation in the construction industry.
Although the most common recruitment route is still “through someone else” and is considered to be effective, we believe that in the future due to labor supply constraints, it will become more difficult to hire people when needed simply by introducing them through acquaintances. You can
In other industries, recruitment activities are conducted using a variety of recruitment methods such as job change sites, direct recruiting, and company information sessions. In addition,
“recruitment publicity,” which communicates the company’s appeal to job seekers, has become a very important initiative for successful recruitment, and an increasing number of companies are focusing on it in recent years. I believe that the construction industry needs to grasp these overall trends in mid-career recruitment and secure a variety of recruitment routes in order to improve its recruitment capabilities.
This year, attention will be focused on how each company responds to the 2024 problem, and it is expected that the polarization between companies that will be selected and those that will not be chosen will increase depending on how each company treats workers, such as the distribution of wages.
Companies need to make efforts to become attractive and chosen by job seekers, such as by improving working conditions such as salaries, benefits, and working styles.
At Sukedachi Research Institute, we will continue to conduct research and make presentations focusing on people working in the construction industry.
