Tomiichi Fukuda, Governor of Tochigi Prefecture, is from Tochigi Prefecture. He became governor of Tochigi Prefecture in December 2004 and is currently in his fifth term.
Countermeasures against the declining birthrate and child-rearing policies are now being implemented by various local governments. Tochigi Prefecture has been one of the first to implement these initiatives. Examples include subsidies for pregnant women to cover the costs of visiting a medical institution due to illness or injury, and “Tomo Choisei” programs that allow the whole family to share household chores. In particular, we are currently focusing on young carer issues. We spoke with Governor Fukuda and his staff about Tochigi Prefecture’s various initiatives.
Governor Fukuda himself is active in household chores such as taking out the trash, collecting scrap items, and ironing. However, even people in the position of governor sometimes have regrets when it comes to raising children.
