Suzunoya Co., Ltd. (head office: Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture), which celebrated its 77th anniversary this year, will relocate and close its Ueno main store on September 16, 2024. Accordingly, we will be holding a relocation closing sale from September 10th (Tuesday) to September 16th (Monday holiday).
Suzunoya Main Store has continued to operate in Ueno for many years with the support of everyone.
However, we would like to inform you that we have decided to relocate and close the store.
[History of Ueno Main Store]
Since its founding in Ueno Hirokoji, Suzunoya Noya Main Store has been supported by many customers and has contributed to the spread of Japanese clothing culture. We would like to look back at the history of the Ueno main store and introduce its progress.
The original store
1. Founded in Ueno Hirokoji
Suzunoya was born on September 28, 1947 in Ueno Hirokoji. It started as a small store with just two rooms of floor space, run by the founder, Kiyoko Koizumi, and one female clerk. When the store first opened, it was a two-story building with an area of 15 tsubo, and the wooden wall on the second floor had a “kimono obi”
A sign saying “Suzunoya” was hung, and five dye samples were displayed in the window.
Suzunoya grew into one of Japan’s leading kimono specialty stores during the post-war period of turmoil, when daily necessities were regulated, by providing services such as “redying Yuzen” and “finishing in a week” a process that would normally take three months. I went.
2. Construction of Suzunoya Building
The construction of the Suzunoya Building is a symbol of the evolution of the Ueno Main Store. In 1964, we purchased the Toshiba Ueno Sales Office building, which was adjacent to our Ueno main store, and underwent our first major renovation. The sales floor area has quadrupled and the site area has increased 2.5 times.
Later, in 1990, the current Suzunoya Noya Main Store building was constructed with eight floors above ground and two floors underground. Based on the concept of “Japanese Design,” the store was spread out from the first to fourth floors, and the seventh floor was equipped with a multipurpose hall and a “Kimono Museum,” functioning as a base for disseminating Japanese information.
The building was extensively renovated in 1964.

3. Future outlook
Suzunoya will continue to move toward a new era while valuing its past history. Along with the relocation of the Ueno main store in Ueno 1-chome, we are planning to open a new store. At the new store, all of our staff are working hard to prepare to provide services and products that will please our customers even more than ever before.
We will let you know the details as soon as they are decided, so please look forward to it.
