In response to a fire at the Machida City Bio-Energy Center’s non-combustible and bulky waste processing facility, which is thought to have started from a lithium-ion battery, Machida City will begin investigating equipment that detects lithium-ion batteries, etc., and will investigate multiple equipment manufacturers from FY2022. I had a hearing on.
As part of this effort, Machida City cooperated with PFU Co., Ltd. and IHI Inspection & Measurement Co., Ltd. in jointly developing a detection system using AI and X-rays, and a prototype was completed in March 2024. .
Now that the prototype has been improved, we will conduct a
demonstration experiment to verify its effectiveness using
non-burnable garbage collected by Machida City.

Demonstration experiment overview
The detection system being tested uses X-rays to photograph
non-burnable garbage flowing on a conveyor, and uses AI to detect lithium-ion batteries, etc. from the images. If lithium-ion batteries are detected using X-rays, a projector is used to irradiate the garbage to visualize the location, and then workers remove the lithium-ion batteries.
In this experiment, we will verify the effectiveness of the detection system by confirming improvements in accuracy and workability in detecting batteries of various shapes from non-burnable garbage collected by the government.
