[Minamisanriku Town x Fossils] “Minamisanriku Town Fossil Weeks” will be held! *Fossil events are held continuously in Minamisanriku Town. “Fossil Symposium” sponsored by the “fossil” community group Hookes, and “Fossil Town” with over 400 coloring books on display.

▪Minamisanriku Town is a fossil town!
The town is a source of rare fossils, with fossils from around 250 million to 160 million years old lying beneath our feet. Reports of new species of fossils, including Japan’s first “dragonfly” and the world’s oldest “ichthyosaur,” are being reported one after another, and researchers frequently visit this area. Fossil excavation experiences are also held in the town, mainly for the private sector, and have become a popular event with more than 1,000 participants per year.
In order to further promote such fossils, the town has introduced a regional revitalization cooperation team to further promote regional revitalization through fossils. “Minamisanriku Town” will be held this time.
“Fossil Weeks” is one of them.

▪“Fossil Symposium – The path to the discovery of new species” 9/6 (Friday) 18:00-20:00
This is a “fossil research lecture” + “new specialty idea contest” event hosted by Hookes, an association to enliven Minamisanriku with fossils. We have invited Professor Emeritus Masayuki Nagahiro of Tohoku University, who is a leading authority on fossil excavation and research in the Minamisanriku region, and Professor Yasuhisa Nakajima, associate professor of the Department of Natural Sciences, Tokyo City University, as lecturers. We will talk about the current state of fossils. Tastings are also planned to coincide with the presentation of the idea sweets.
Last year’s symposium
▪“Fossil Town Minamisanriku Coloring Exhibition” 8/31 (Friday) – 9/13 (Friday) Exhibition events and exhibits, also planned and led by Hookes, will be posted inside the Ujie Super Minamisanriku store. The total number of applications from within and outside the town reached over 400. You can see paleontological creatures reconstructed from fossils, colored with a variety of sensibilities. The publication period will be until September 13th (Friday).
A unique paleontology appears
▪ 『Challenge to discover new species! Fossil excavation tour” 9/7 (Sat), 9/8 (Sun)
A two-day fossil program will be held, a first for the Minamisanriku Town Tourism Association, with paleontologist Yasuhisa Nakajima as instructor. Under the theme of “discovering new species,” we will conduct fossil excavations, tours of fossil production areas and exhibition facilities, lectures on fossils by active researchers, and indoor experiences (participant recruitment is now closed).

The fossil event will also be held in October. Based on the nationally popular Tyrannosaurus race, we created a unique costumed lace called “Utatsusaurus Race in
