Launch of 378A08 pre-polarized ICP(R) 1/4 microphone with
ultra-compact, high sensitivity and low noise
*~More accurate ear position measurement of high-frequency sounds unique to EVs and sound measurement in narrow spaces~*
Toyo Technica Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Toshiya Kono, hereinafter referred to as Toyo Technica) is an American PCB manufacturer.
We started selling the pre-polarized ICP(R) 1/4 microphone “378A08” manufactured by Piezotronics on September 4, 2024. This product is an ultra-compact microphone with a total length of 80 mm, yet achieves high sensitivity and low noise with a maximum of 50 mV/Pa. It can measure high-frequency and minute sounds specific to EVs (electric vehicles) with high precision at the ear position, and can also be installed and measured in narrow places near electric components. “378A08” main body
* [Background/Summary]*
In automobile development, one of the challenges in improving comfort is reducing noise. In EVs (electric vehicles), which have been developed in recent years, the noise of each component has become relatively noticeable as the engine sound, which was the main noise source in the past, has disappeared. In particular, the noise generated by electric components such as inverters and motors is minute but high-frequency and extremely unpleasant to humans, so noise countermeasures are required. This high-frequency sound has a short wavelength, so even a shift of just a few centimeters changes the phase and greatly affects the sound pressure.
In addition, the higher the frequency, the more likely the sound field is disturbed by the presence of the microphone itself.Furthermore, sound reflection occurs in the vehicle interior, and high-frequency sound enters from various directions, making it difficult to measure sound that differs from the original state. There is also a concern that this may occur. Due to these circumstances, it has been considered extremely difficult to evaluate sound at the ear position inside the vehicle.
The newly released “378A08” is extremely small with a total length of approximately 80 mm, yet it achieves a high sensitivity of 50 mV/Pa, making it possible to measure even minute sounds at high frequencies with high precision. Furthermore, even when microphones are placed close together at multiple points to measure high-frequency sounds that fluctuate at intervals of several centimeters, the small size allows disturbances in the sound field to be kept to a minimum. Furthermore, since it is non-directional even in the high frequency range, highly accurate measurement is possible even when high frequency reflected sound enters the vehicle interior from various directions.
By providing the 378A08, Toyo Technica will help solve the problem of noise reduction in EV development, thereby improving the comfort of EVs and supporting their further spread.

* -About PCB Piezotronics, Inc.-*
Founded in 1967 in Buffalo, New York, PCB Piezotronics is a company specializing in dynamic pressure, loads and vibrations.
We started out as a specialized manufacturer of various sensors using quartz piezoelectric elements that can measure motion.
Since then, we have expanded our lineup to include various types of accelerometers, load cells, impact hammers, torque sensors,
microphones, and hand-arm vibrometers, and are now a global brand of high-performance sensors.
