Collaboration begins with Furuno Electric on the development of LEO (low orbit)/MEO (medium orbit) (*) satellite communication antennas. *Aiming for early commercialization of satellite communication antennas for ships that enable high-speed, large-capacity
communication at sea, where mobile data communication is difficult* Furuno Electric’s experimental boat used in demonstration experiments
Sharp is a leading company in the field of marine electronic equipment, Furuno Electric Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, Representative Director and President: Furuno We will begin collaboration with Yukio (hereinafter referred to as Furuno Electric) on the development of LEO (Low Earth Orbit)/MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) satellite communication antennas.
At sea, where mobile data communication is difficult, demand for LEO/MEO satellite communication, which enables high-quality, high-speed, large-capacity communication, is particularly high, and its use on ships is expected to expand. We are developing small and lightweight LEO/MEO satellite communication antennas by leveraging the compactness and weight reduction technology and communication technology cultivated through the design of smartphones. Furuno Electric has developed a global manufacturing and sales business for various navigation equipment and marine communication equipment, and has extensive experience and know-how in marine equipment, which led to this collaboration. Through this collaboration, we will gain Furuno Electric’s specialized knowledge and support in the ship field to accelerate development. By commercializing LEO/MEO satellite communication antennas suitable for use on ships as soon as possible, we will not only improve the communication environment during navigation, but also contribute to the promotion of DX in ship operations.
Additionally, the two companies will collaborate to conduct a demonstration experiment in mid-September of this year. Furuno Electric’s experimental boat was equipped with the LEO/MEO satellite communication antenna currently under development and sailed on a test course at sea. In addition to obstacles such as bridges, we will examine the practicality and challenges under various conditions during navigation, such as the influence of the ship’s direction and speed on communication. This demonstration will be conducted with support from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). (JPJO12368G50501)
