Earth’s ice cream “Hobetsu Tomorin”
* Inquiry learning about local issues *
At Hokkaido Mukawa High School, we are focusing on “inquiry learning,” in which students discover local issues in Mukawa Town and seek solutions to them. This year, two third-year female students focused on the current situation in which many of the agricultural products produced in Mukawa Town are discarded as substandard products, and devised ice cream as a solution to this problem.
*Collaboration between local communities and companies*
The girls requested the cooperation of Daichi no Ice (Lanbell), which produces ice cream using Hokkaido ingredients, and this collaboration was realized. In addition, this initiative aims to make effective use of local resources by utilizing non-standard products such as Kanro (Ajiuri), a local specialty of the Hobetsu area. In response, the Hobetsu Kanro Production Committee, which is made up of producers, collected non-standard raw material Kanro. Lambell has developed a recipe that brings out the flavor of Kanro by leveraging its know-how in craft ice production. We were in charge of the entire manufacturing process.
*Producer’s thoughts/Charm of “Tomorin”*
Kanro has a short shelf life and is difficult to ship outside of Hokkaido, so it was limited to local consumption. By processing the ice cream into ice cream, producers aim to increase demand and raise awareness of the product name “Tomorin.”
“Tomorin” is a variety that was created by crossing melon and ajiuri to make people enjoy “kanro (ajiuri),” which has been popular among locals since ancient times. It is characterized by the mellow aroma of melon and the refreshing aftertaste of traditional Japanese cucumber. *“Tomorin” is a registered trademark of Kobayashi Farm Co., Ltd.
* The particularity of “Daichi no Ice”*
Daichi no Ice does not use any food additives such as emulsifiers, stabilizers, or flavorings because we aim to create ice cream that everyone can enjoy with peace of mind, and because we want people to enjoy the flavor of the ingredients as they are. No. This is a product that the whole family can enjoy with its natural taste.
