Japanese Buddhism was undergoing a period of great change due to the new Meiji government’s policy to make Shinto the national religion and the introduction of the culture of Western European powers into Japan during the Meiji Restoration. Amidst the persecution of
Haibutsu-kishaku, there were many people who worked hard to talk about and spread Buddhism.
“Biography of Modern and Contemporary Japanese Buddhists” introduces Buddhists who were active over the approximately 160 years from the Meiji period to the present day, and explains their lives,
achievements, and connections with the present day. The commentator is Atsushi Sato, a visiting researcher at Toyo University Inoue Enryo Philosophy Center.
In the first article, we will introduce Mokurai Shimaji, a monk of the Honganji sect of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.

*Shimaji Mokurai*
Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1838 (Tenpo 9). He was a monk of the Nishi Hongan-ji school and was called one of the three great figures of the Meiji Restoration. In 1866 (Keio 2), he became the chief priest of Myoseiji Temple and worked hard to reform Buddhism, and in 1872 (Meiji 5) he became the first Buddhist to tour Europe. He also contributed to the revival of Buddhism and women’s education, and worked to propagate Buddhism as the chief priest of Gankyoji Temple in Morioka City. His achievements are etched in Buddhist history as the “Mokurai period.”

* Atsushi Sato *
Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1967 (Showa 42). Completed doctoral course at Toyo University Graduate School of Letters, Department of Indian Philosophy and Buddhism. He received a Ph.D. (literature) for his work on “Study of Silla and Goryeo Huagon teachings.” Currently, he is a part-time lecturer at Toyo University, Senshu University, and Dokkyo University. Co-authored “Buddhism in the Unified Silla Period” and “History of New Asian Buddhism”
Volume 10” (Kosei Publishing), and translated books include “History of Korean Buddhism” (Shunjusha).
