Message from the Lighthouse The Steering Committee will hold a meeting on Sunday, August 25, 2024 to help local residents gain a deeper understanding of the committee’s efforts to utilize the Obaehana Lighthouse and Ikuzuki Nagasehana Lighthouse. For this purpose, we held a “Lighthouse Utilization Project Resident Information Session/Social Gathering ~Waiwai Gaya Gaya Ramba Banquet”.
This initiative, as part of the Nippon Foundation’s “Ocean and Japan Project,” excavates local ocean memories centered on lighthouses, connects regions, different fields and industries, and Japan and the world, creating new ocean experiences. This project was carried out with the support of the “Sea and Lighthouse Project.”

In the second part, Seigo Kubo, co-representative of Gattarai Co., Ltd., a local company that operates a campsite near Obaehana Lighthouse, and Kohei Kawamoto (both members of this committee) discuss the future revitalization of Hirado and Ikitsuki. He delivered a passionate and inspiring message. The two said that one of their dreams was to express their feelings at this development center. “Last year’s lighthouse event, which was a great success, will not end. We will continue to make great strides! Local resources, nature, experiences, communication, branding, and challenges that will be discovered in the future. This lighthouse will continue to carry forward that bright future. It will continue to shine.Let’s start rebranding Ikitsuki Town from here,” he said, and many of the visitors seemed to share this sentiment.

Ikitsuki Lighthouse and future prospects
Ikitsuki-cho, Hirado City flourished as a whaling island during the Edo period, and is said to have supported the finances of the Hirado clan. During the Showa era, the company entered the purse seine fishing industry in the East China Sea. At its peak, the island had more than 20 large purse seine fishing fleets, greatly enriching the island’s economy, but in recent years the number of fleets has decreased sharply due to a decline in the amount of fish caught, and the current population is about 4,800. .
The island is long and narrow from north to south, with Obaehana Lighthouse to the north and Ikitsuki Nagasehana Lighthouse to the south. Because the history of the town’s formation is divided into north and south, there have been few opportunities for the island to come together as one, but with the 2022 “Lighthouse Marche” as an opportunity, two town development management councils, two elementary schools, and two fishing cooperatives will join together. Together, we are working as one to revitalize Ikitsuki Island with the lighthouse as our core. In the future, we plan to build terrace fences and event-like features in the square at Obaehana Lighthouse, making it a more fun place for people to gather, and creating opportunities for people to gather at the lighthouse on a regular basis.
