Actual inquiry learning

In this inquiry learning, high school students work in teams to come up with solutions to the issues that companies and organizations are actually facing, and in doing so, they realize that solving the issues that companies are facing will lead to achieving the goals of the SDGs. As one of our aims, this has been carried out continuously since 2020. This exploratory learning is based on SDGs-related learning, receiving and solving problems from familiar business organizations and having contact with society, and considering whether it can be used in one’s career (career path), which led to the current plan. It seems like it is.

Every year, at the final round of the program, high school students have an opportunity to present their ideas, and this year as well, we are planning to hold a presentation competition on January 30, 2025 at the May Theater Large Hall of the Suita City Cultural Center. I plan to participate.
*Teacher’s thoughts on inquiry learning*
* I interviewed Mr. Tomihara of Osaka Gakuin University High School. * Q: “Please tell me about Osaka Gakuin University High School’s policy on adopting this type of learning.”
A:
“In this grade, students will acquire the following skills: 1. The ability to affirm themselves, 2. The ability to listen carefully, 3. The ability to acknowledge others, 4. The ability to act responsibly, and 5. The ability to continue learning. I hope that they will acquire these skills through inquiry learning.”

Q: “Please tell us your thoughts on the inquiry study you started to acquire these skills.”
A: “I want high school students to feel more connected to society by thinking about solutions to issues faced by local business
organizations and actually receiving feedback from people in business organizations. We want them to be exposed to the public eye and work on solving problems under stress, as they will need these skills when they enter the workforce, so we want them to acquire these skills every year. We are conducting this inquiry learning.
* What is the future of domestic timber that we think about together with high school students? *

In this research study, our association provided high school students with the theme, “To revitalize Japan’s forestry industry, show us the appeal of using domestic materials for your home!” Exploring this theme is an important theme that leads to thinking about the sustainability of Japan’s forestry industry and, by extension, the sustainability of the global environment.

*History and current situation of forestry in Japan*

Although Japan is the second largest forest country in the world, its wood self-sufficiency rate is low compared to other countries, and in 2002 it was 18.8%. From there, there are government measures, etc., and as of 2021, 41.1% (
Forestry Agency FY2020 Forest and Forestry White Paper (published on May 30, 2020), full text p118
) has recovered. The proportion of wooden houses in newly built houses is 91% for single-family houses, and 59% overall (Forestry Agency 2021)
Forests and Forestry White Paper (published on May 31, 2020), Part 1 Special Feature 2 Section 2 Trends in the use of wood in the construction field (1)

), and wood as a construction material is a very important point when considering Japanese housing.

In 2021, due to the impact of the coronavirus, the price of wood imported from overseas has skyrocketed due to the wood shock, and the pros and cons of relying on imports for the wood that supports our lives are being questioned. However, there are a variety of reasons for the demand for construction materials, such as “Will there be stable demand in the future (regardless of wood shock)?” and “Advanced technology is required to prepare dried lumber in humid Japan.” The self-sufficiency rate remains at 49.5%. In order to increase this self-sufficiency rate, each country and local government has a variety of subsidies for the use of domestically produced materials.

*Challenges in distribution of domestic materials*
Quoted from the Forestry Agency official website

According to a questionnaire survey conducted by the Japan Wooden Housing Industry Association, the main reasons why housing
manufacturers do not use domestic materials for wooden frame houses are “higher price compared to foreign materials” and “necessary materials.” “Sometimes it is not possible to secure the necessary amount,” etc.
(Forestry Agency FY2021 Forests and Forestry White Paper (published on May 31, 2020) Material Special 2-30)
. For this reason, efforts have been made to increase the scale and consolidation of sawmills, etc., and to improve the efficiency of distribution, and although the proportion of domestically produced timber is gradually increasing, it is said that these efforts need to be continued.
*Advantages of domestically produced timber distribution*

Example: Because of less transportation, it is less susceptible to price increases such as oil than imported materials. It also leads to CO2 reduction.
Example) As shown in the diagram on the left, using wood is part of the cycle of “cutting, using, planting, and growing” in an artificial forest. Absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2)* Protecting the country from disasters*

According to a survey, 48.3% of people have regrets about the housing facilities at home (number of valid respondents: 1,713). In order to ensure that no one regrets building a house, a residential
construction coordinator works closely with those who want to build a house, works between them and specialists, and assists them with the location, building materials, floor plans, gardens, lifestyle, how to borrow money, etc. We coordinate everything related to home
construction, such as this, and guide you through building a home with no regrets.
