Sustainable tourism destination promotion “Ethical Travel Okinawa” received the “UN Tourism Special Award” at the 8th “Japan Tourism Awards”
The Okinawa Convention and Visitors Bureau (Chairman: Yoshiro Shimoji, hereinafter referred to as OCVB) is organizing the “Tourism EXPO Japan” (organized by the Japan Tourism Association, the Japan Travel Agents Association (JATA), and the Japan National Tourism Organization (OCVB). At the 8th Japan Tourism Awards held by JNTO), the efforts of the sustainable tourist destination promotion “Ethical Travel Okinawa” Tourism Special Award. (UN Tourism is the common name for the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO))
■About sustainable tourism destination promotion “Ethical Travel Okinawa”
Okinawa Prefecture and OCVB have been working together since FY2021 to develop a new initiative aimed at fostering and developing
“Okinawa-ness” among tourists visiting Okinawa, tourism operators, and Okinawan residents as part of their efforts to create sustainable tourist destinations. We are proposing a form of tourism in Okinawa called “Ethical Travel Okinawa.” Through a “travel to spend time with the local community” while experiencing Okinawa’s nature, traditions, and industry, each visitor not only feels like a member of the local community, but the tourism operators and Okinawan people who welcome them have the same idea, and both parties We are working on initiatives that will encourage people to consider local life and the natural environment when traveling.
