archaeological heritage research method program. *

On the day of the event, Risa Fukuda, a visiting researcher at Waseda University’s Research Institute for Cultural Properties, and two other lecturers participated and conducted fieldwork in Yokohama based on an archeology research theme. *
Participants and instructor investigating the ruins
In this program, we conducted fieldwork in Yokohama based on archaeological research methods that actively incorporate digital technology. Instructors and middle and high school student
participants gathered in Yokohama to investigate the remains of the Great Kanto Earthquake.
Archeology is the study of how our ancestors lived and how they built society. Through this learning, you can learn about your roots and gain wisdom and insight for living in the present. The knowledge and perspectives gained through archeology go beyond simply understanding history, and have a significant impact on solving problems in modern society and creating the future.
The junior high and high school students who participated in this archeology event realized the joy of “discovering” history and the importance of learning from the past and connecting it to the future as they investigated and deciphered the ruins and artifacts of the past.
In the future, “RIZAPRO Extracurricular Activities,” provided by RIZAPRO Co., Ltd., will continue to actively hold activities that allow children to “make social issues their own,” and to acquire the ability to contribute to society in their own way and carve out a future.

Participants observing underground ruins
* Investigation of Yokohama’s historical remains hidden throughout the city *
During fieldwork, we conducted research in Yokohama with the aim of unraveling the history of the city through archeology. Many
participants realized that there were important remains in
inconspicuous places, such as the old Yokohama Port Station platform and the remains of the former customs office, but at the same time they also began to question why these remains were left behind. It seems like it was.
Lecturer Risa Fukuda also gave a lecture on things to be aware of when conducting actual archaeological field research, and the participants deepened their learning.
Sharing findings during fieldwork
* How can the remains of the Great Kanto Earthquake be used in modern society? *
After the fieldwork was completed, the participants deepened their understanding through discussions about ways to utilize these remains in modern society, making full use of the digital technology used in the fieldwork. Based on the basic idea of archaeology, “the basic nature of humans remains unchanged through the ages,” we proposed ways to impact society through the use of archaeological remains.
The results of this program will be presented orally at the “Japan Society for Disaster and Disaster Prevention Archeology Study Group” scheduled to be held on September 28th and 29th, 2024.
* ・Voices from students who actually participated*
・It was very hot and difficult, but I realized that there were more ruins around the city than I had imagined (1st year high school student)
・To be honest, I didn’t understand why they were spending so much effort to preserve the ruins until I participated, but after actually investigating, I was able to understand the value better (second year high school student)
