* overview* :
This exhibition is a large-scale commemorative exhibition in which selected collections from the Yumeji Museum of Art travel to museums across the country.The Tokyo exhibition, which started at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in June, attracted a great deal of attention and response. Yumeji has been loved throughout the ages and continues to attract many people even 90 years after his death. For this exhibition in Okayama, the main venue will be the main building of the Yumeji Local Art Museum, and the Yumeji Birthplace Memorial Hall and Shonen Sanso will be used as satellite venues. Approximately 270 works will be exhibited, including newly acquired works and valuable collection works that will be shown for the first time only at the Okayama exhibition. I would like to introduce some points.

Yumeji Takehisa, who created a unique style known as the
“Yumeji-style beauty” that took the world by storm in the late Meiji period, was the artist who best exuded the mature charm of Japanese modern art and culture from the Meiji period to the Taisho period and the Showa period. He became a pioneer who opened up a new era, working not only on paintings but also on covers of magazines and musical scores, book bindings, and the design of daily necessities. His pioneering activities, which transcend genres such as painters, poets, and designers, have attracted attention as a multi-purpose artist who is ahead of his time.

There are only about 30 oil paintings by Yumeji in existence, and this exhibition will feature the famous painting “Amaryllis,” whose whereabouts were unknown for a long time and was discovered 80 years later, and an oil painting painted during his stay in the United States “West Coast. The exhibition will feature 12 works, including “Nude”, focusing on Yumeji as an oil painter. In addition, the sketches of Yumeji’s travels abroad that he left behind for his friend Fujoka Masaki, the doctor who attended his final moments, will be exhibited for the first time, and only in Okayama will you be able to view sketches of nude women that lead to “Nudes on the West Coast”.

Born in Okayama, Yumeji became a popular self-taught artist and survived the turbulent first half of the 20th century.We will introduce Yumeji’s painting skills and charm through the Yumeji Museum of Art’s new collection, his masterpieces, and a variety of other works. Experience the world of Yumeji Takehisa more deeply in his hometown of Okayama.
