“My Lying Internal Organs” (2024, 11 minutes video) (C) Shinobu Soejima Shinobu Soejima solo exhibition “My Lying Internal Organs: Circulating Hub” *Duration: September 17, 2024 (Tuesday) to October 14, 2024 (Monday holiday)* Soejima, who creates short films and video works using 3D animation techniques, is a young 3D animation artist who has received
international attention and has won awards at international short film festivals.
In this exhibition, CREATIVE HUB UENO will feature a part of the latest work “My Lying Internal Organs” (2024, 11 minute video). It will be developed as a video installation in conjunction with “es”. By likening the gallery space to the inside of an organ and exhibiting it inside Ueno Station, which can be called the hub of Tokyo, we will attempt to create a cycle between the city and the individual.
*Artist statement*
I consider animation to be “the driving force that transforms death into life,” and by animating organic matter such as rice, meat, and insects, as well as puppets, I create an image of inside and outside, living things and non-living things, subject and object, death and life. , and attempts to rub and dissolve the boundaries between contradictory things.
Or, through trial and error, we wonder if it is possible to reconsider the murky relationship between our bodies and the land.
When animating puppets and organic objects, sometimes parts of the body move to one side because they interfere with each other or become dirty. The friction between opposites, like a gift relationship, harmonizes the boundaries between different things, such as subject and object, and inside and outside.
I refer to this phenomenon as “the circulation of inside and outside.” Inside Out/Outside In
It’s called “Cycle”. We eat grains born from the soil, excrete them, and what we excrete returns to the soil, from which grains are born again…We live in a cycle where the inside and outside circulate.
My internal organs may become someone else’s internal organs, or someone else’s internal organs may become my internal organs. I am the other, and the other world is me… Could this kind of multispecies thinking be a way to reconsider the relationship between subjects and others? I am exploring ways to reconcile these boundaries by making full use of the power of animation and the functions of traditional puppets. I think we need a way to connect with others on the other side today.

“Metabolizing doll”
Soejima intentionally incorporates organic materials such as real bird heads, moth wings, and salmon skin into the world of his works, which are filled with the Asian religious rituals and traditions that Soejima acquired through his own experiences in Nepal, Malaysia, and other countries. Soejima’s dolls are given human shapes, but they are nothing more than a membrane of life, and within that membrane, all kinds of things that are put into the world of the work are absorbed and digested, and chemical changes continue to occur. .

As the first step in a comprehensive partnership agreement between Tokyo University of the Arts and JR East, this gallery was created on the site of a renovated police box at Ueno Station.
We will exhibit the works of young artists who are students and graduates of Tokyo University of the Arts, creating an opportunity to come into contact with works of art that reflect the times. In addition, we will treat the entire Ueno Station as a museum, showcasing the artworks scattered throughout the station, and create a place for diverse cultural exchange.
The “es” in the gallery’s name refers to the “unconscious realm” in psychological terms, and was chosen with the aim of creating a space that accommodates a variety of desires and energies and embodies a small but infinite range of expression.
