The Ishitetsu Haku clothing store is located in the Ishitetsu Shiro area of Gifu Prefecture, a small mountain village at an altitude of 700 meters that has been around since the Jomon period. The “yo no beauty” and “modeling” methods of cutting straight lines with almost no waste on cloth, which has been passed down for agricultural purposes, have been carried out since the Jomon period. “Beauty” and reside there
We continue to create products every day to pass on spirituality to the next generation.
This time, the largest exhibition in British history dedicated to folk art “Art Without Heroes” will be held.
The products of Ishitetsu Haku Clothes Store are featured as an eco-conscious brand that symbolizes modern folk crafts in “Mingei”. Among them, as part of the exhibition event on August 29th, the straight line made by Ishitetsu Haku Clothes Store is featured. A demonstration was held showing the cutting of “Tatsuke,” a traditional folk costume made only by cutting and sewing. The event was held in a hall between the exhibition spaces and was attended by 20 to 25 British nationals and Japanese living in the UK.
The impressions from the participants are as follows.
“I sympathize with the fact that they learn from their grandmothers and make things that have been passed down in the land of
Ishiteshiro.”
“I became interested in the mountainous area of Ishiteshiro itself.” “The cutting pattern is completely different from Western pants, and there is no waste, which is very nice.”
“I was impressed by the Japanese traditional idea of straight cutting.” There was a lot of praise.

Without Heroes
“Mingei” is based on the theme of “Three Generations of Mingei.” In the 19th century, the Mingei movement by Shoji Hamada and Kanjiro Kawai, which influenced Soetsu Yanagi and his friends, became active and the soil for Mingei was cultivated.
Introducing 21st century brands that reinterpret the core values of Mingei in a modern way while questioning the 20th century, when Mingei was created, and the state of Mingei today.
Ishitetsu White Clothes Store will be introduced in the 21st century section as an eco-conscious brand that symbolizes modern folk crafts. This exhibition will highlight environmentally friendly
sustainability, careful and slow manufacturing, natural materials and tradition as the principles of Mingei.
These include innovative technology, responsibility and connection to the region, and unknown craftsmanship. We are very honored that you chose Ishitoshiro Clothing Store and also that we were able to host an event like this.
This time, we recognized that people from overseas are highly interested in this topic. We would like to continue to spread the idea of “Tatsuke” cutting and clothing both in Japan and abroad. *In addition, a talk session titled “Where Tatsuke and Folk Crafts Intersect,” which will include a report on the exhibition and demonstration in London, will be held on September 28th at Jiyu Gakuen Myokikan in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.
