Before the period of high economic growth, people went to satoyama to get firewood and feed for livestock. However, due to changes in lifestyles, there are fewer opportunities for people to enter Satoyama.
In satoyama areas that are no longer occupied by humans, strong plants such as bamboo and vines proliferate in large numbers, and the diverse trees and grasses that used to live there are decreasing and falling into disrepair. In degraded Satoyama areas, there is a risk that the water holding capacity of the ground surface will decrease, leading to landslides and deterioration of the landscape.

In Forenta, local residents who want to revitalize the Satoyama and leave a rich forest for the future are renting out their own Satoyama. Users can rent Satoyama on an annual contract and enjoy their private forest space whenever they want.
Forest rentals began in Mito and Kasama cities in 2023, and are currently used by a total of 45 groups of campers.

At night, the Kasama camp area that I run is completely dark and you can’t hear a single sound. It was a quiet place to say the least, with no people coming and going, but it was also a lonely place.
As we continued to operate Kasama Camp, it was the people who used the area that brought life to this quiet place. Thanks to a lot of ingenuity and activity, the area has changed beyond recognition. I witnessed the transformation of such an area and was moved by the fact that a place that some people cannot control and wants someone else’s help can become a special place with great value for others. I find it fascinating that they are working hard to create an area with a sparkling aura, and at the same time, I am deeply grateful that they chose this former stone quarry and forest as their campsite.
