“Regenerative agriculture” was introduced at the United Nations organization FAO in 2022 because it can contribute to climate change mitigation by storing soil carbon, and in recent years it has been featured at the United Nations Climate Summit and networks of major global companies. It is rapidly attracting attention as it has been introduced. On the other hand, however, there is no clear definition of “regenerative agriculture,” which has led to new social problems such as word abuse and greenwashing.
Patagonia participated in the establishment of Regenerative Organic (RO) certification in 2017, clearly defining “organic agriculture that regenerates the environment,” and supporting the expansion of regenerative agriculture based on organic agriculture. I’ve been doing it. Currently, we have obtained RO certification in 34 countries around the world, and in Asia there are cases of certification in India, Indonesia, Thailand, and South Korea, but not yet in Japan. For this reason, we are creating examples in Japan and using this as an opportunity to advance initiatives.
This time, with the theme of “field system” of “soil health”, which is one of the three pillars of Regenerative Organic Certification, we will gain a common understanding of the agriculture promoted by Patagonia and organize the discussion. This is an opportunity to make real progress.
*Regenerative Organic Conference Purpose*
Last spring, we held Japan’s first “Regenerative Organic Conference” in order to expand and deepen the discussion about agriculture as a solution to repairing the earth.

Currently, people are interested in topics such as “soil”, “no-till management”, “regenerative agriculture”, and “what kind of agriculture is better for the environment?” This has led to more active discussions and industry action. In September 2024, the world’s first regenerative and organic certified pasta will be released in Japan, and the actual product and the story behind it are attracting increasing attention.
This is the second time that the event has been held, and in response to such interests, we will have practitioners of upland systems share their efforts, thereby delving deeper into the diversity and depth of these themes in Japan, as well as providing insight into the future. In 2017, Patagonia collaborated with multiple organizations to establish Regenerative Organic Certification. The Patagonia Japan branch has also been promoting this initiative domestically since 2021. A holistic system, Regenerative Organic is built on three pillars: soil health, animal welfare, and social equity. Of these three pillars, this time’s theme is “soil health,” and the farmland system (we will discuss “paddy field systems” next time).
This conference is aimed not only at those who want to learn about Regenerative Organic and the agricultural and food initiatives promoted by Patagonia, but also for those who want to learn about regenerative agriculture, how to implement it in domestic upland systems, and the transformation of food systems and agriculture. We believe this will be the perfect opportunity for those who want to learn about the positive possibilities that they have as a concrete entry point.
Since the discussion will be based on farmland, such as soil and agricultural production activities, we are targeting practitioners of production activities and land managers, but anyone with an interest is welcome to participate.
