Fun for both children and adults! A single-page illustrated book of Edo plants! ……
The Saitama City Omiya Bonsai Art Museum exhibits monozukushi-e prints of potted plants titled “Ukeki-zukushi” and “Potted Plants-zukushi” based on the trend of gardening culture during the Edo period. We will hold a special exhibition featuring the following topics.
This exhibition focuses on works of art depicting potted plants of approximately 1,416 potted plants of approximately 130 types revealed as a result of research, mainly from the collections of private collectors. We will also feature Uke-e (Uke-e) depicting auspicious potted plants, and introduce you to the fun that can only be found in monozukushi-e, where you can see and learn about the types and characteristics of plants individually and at a glance.

What is monozukushi-e?
One of the classifications of ukiyo-e prints is “toy pictures,” and there is a group called “monozukushi pictures.” This is a print made mainly for children, and is a collection of many types of prints based on a certain theme, arranged in a list like an illustrated
encyclopedia. For example, in addition to “bird-filled” and “beast-filled” collections of various types of birds and animals, there are also potted plants titled “plant-filled” and “potted plants” based on the gardening culture trends of the Edo period. Many pictures of plants were also created. There are many illustrations with the names of the plants next to the potted plants, and this one-sheet print is like an illustrated plant encyclopedia for children, where they can have fun looking at the pictures and learn about both plants and letters.
