We will be holding a course on “Lithium Ion Batteries and Fires” led by leading instructors.
Fires caused by LIB are now frequently seen on the news. Fire accidents involving electric vehicles (xEV) are occurring frequently overseas. This supports the rationale that fire accidents will occur if strict testing is not introduced. This course explains LIB burnout analysis, ignition risk, storage methods, and recycling.
This course is scheduled to start on October 21, 2024.

Fire accidents involving electric vehicles (xEV) are occurring frequently overseas. This is caused by differences in testing methods and development standards during the development process of automotive batteries, and supports the argument that fires will occur if strict testing is not introduced. In this regard, in Japan, the development standards of automobile manufacturers are set at a high level, and the battery development process is based on these standards, so there have been no fire accidents involving Japanese xEVs equipped with Japanese batteries. This is the logic. We will explain the specific differences based on actual examples of fire accidents.

Part 2: Analysis of lithium-ion batteries to ensure safety
[Purpose of the lecture]
With the spread of devices equipped with lithium-ion batteries, the risk of battery burnout accidents is also increasing. These accidents can occur due to a combination of deterioration, manufacturing quality issues, external environmental influences, and accidental factors such as shocks and drops.
In this seminar, we will introduce burnout analysis and methods for evaluating the quality and structure of new batteries (battery quality analysis) as ways to prevent such burnout accidents.
Additionally, if a burnout accident occurs in battery-equipped equipment, we will also propose a burnout damage investigation to confirm how the equipment is damaged and how it progresses to a fire. Through this, we will propose measures to ensure safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

The shift change to EVs and PHEVs is accelerating worldwide. As countries around the world, mainly in Europe, ban the sale of cars that use fossil fuels by 2030, the world’s leading car manufacturers are also moving to sell cars that comply with these policies. In line with this movement, the world’s leading manufacturers of lithium-ion secondary batteries (LIB) have also announced plans to increase production. As more and more LIBs are being used in our daily lives, we have begun to see more and more fires caused by LIBs on the news. While LIBs are convenient, they can be extremely dangerous if handled or disposed of incorrectly.
Nearly six years have passed since VOLTA Co., Ltd. was established in January 2018, and even before the factory started operating, it had been collecting LIBs, but there had never been a fire accident during storage or transportation. We recognize that fire accidents during storage can be prevented if proper storage methods are used. If stored correctly, lithium-ion batteries are not dangerous, but a valuable resource.
