Authense Law Office (Minato-ku, Tokyo) has published a report article from a roundtable discussion held at the office titled “The Real Life After Childcare Leave.” In this roundtable discussion, employees from various occupations and positions at our office talk about the circumstances and challenges they faced in taking maternity and childcare leave and returning to work. In the future, our office will continue to help create an environment in which it is natural for everyone to take childcare leave by providing support for employees of various occupations and positions to take maternity and childcare leave and return to work. We will do our best to achieve this goal. *For convenience, the term “childcare leave” includes leave taken by lawyers for childcare.

Our office regularly holds the “Authense Award,” an in-house event in which all staff members participate.
At the “Authense Award 2024 in Summer” held on July 19, 2024, one of the contents was a roundtable discussion “Real life after childcare leave” with people in the office who had experience of maternity and childcare leave.
This roundtable discussion included six staff members (including the moderator) who had actually returned to work after taking maternity and childcare leave, including a lawyer who became the first male lawyer at our firm to take two months of childcare leave. A total of 7 people) participated.
It was a roundtable discussion with members who transcended the boundaries between men and women, lawyers and staff.
The roundtable report released this time allows you to know the real thoughts of the employees who are raising children and work at our office.
The revisions to the Childcare and Family Care Leave Act, which have been gradually implemented since April 2022, have meant that many women are forced to quit their jobs due to the difficulty of balancing work and childcare, and that men are less likely to participate in childcare than they would like. It is thought that the move was made in light of the possibility that the lack of progress is having an impact on women’s continued employment.
According to the Basic Employment Equality Survey by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the rate of childcare leave taken in fiscal 2023 will be 84.1% for women and 30.1% for men (including postpartum paternity leave), and the rate of men taking childcare leave has decreased in recent years. is increasing significantly.
However, 37.7% of men’s childcare leave is less than 2 weeks (15.7% is less than 5 days, 22.0% is between 5 days and less than 2 weeks), and long-term childcare leave is still widely available for men. That’s a difficult situation.
Under these circumstances, lawyers and law firm employees, whose professions are generally perceived as “busy”, are disclosing the background and challenges they faced before returning to work after maternity and childcare leave. We believe that this will serve as an opportunity to demonstrate that childcare leave can be taken regardless of gender, industry, job title, etc., and so we have published a report article from the roundtable discussion.
In the future, our office will continue to support the creation of an environment in which employees of various occupations and positions can take maternity and childcare leave and return to work, thereby creating a society in which it is natural for everyone to take childcare leave. We will do our best to make this a reality. -reference-
