FANCL Co., Ltd. held a special lecture called “FANCL Kanagawa SDGs Course” at the 26th Toin Interesting Experience Classroom. The theme was “Take care of your skin! – Protect your skin from external stimuli.” On the day, our researchers served as instructors to teach elementary school students from nearby Toin Gakuen Private School (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture) and their protection. 60 people participated.
In the course, we talked about the four major enemies of the skin: temperature, ultraviolet rays, foreign substances, and friction. He also explained that environmental changes such as air pollution and global warming are related to “enemy” stimuli.
Next, we explained the ultraviolet rays that we are exposed to in our daily lives in the sunlight so that we can better understand them. In addition, to confirm the visualization of ultraviolet rays, we used a geometrically shaped object (=prism) made of transparent material to break down sunlight and draw a rainbow in the classroom. The children exclaimed, “Ultraviolet light is not purple!” and their eyes widened at the unexpected discovery.
As for measures against UV rays, we experimented with applying sunscreen using a balloon as a face. Even if you want to protect your skin from UV rays, you can experience how difficult it is to apply sunscreen evenly by applying it to a balloon. They also discovered that if they deflated the balloon, they could clearly see the unevenness of the application, and while having fun, they also experienced the correct way to apply sunscreen.
Finally, I explained that if you no longer need sunscreen, it will become a “foreign object” on your skin. Once the sunscreen was no longer needed, I explained that it was important to lather the detergent thoroughly and gently remove the sunscreen without causing any friction on the skin.I actually lathered the detergent and washed off the sunscreen.
In the post-implementation survey, we found some comments such as, “I used to hate wearing sunscreen, but now that I know it’s necessary, I’m going to apply it properly from now on.”Through taking care of their own skin, they are becoming more aware of the environment and the SDGs. This provided an opportunity to learn.
[What is FANCL Kanagawa SDGs course]
Our company established an executive committee with companies and organizations in Kanagawa Prefecture, and this course aims to promote SDGs and contribute to the local community. Companies and
organizations that support this activity act as instructors, and they introduce what the SDGs are in the first place, as well as help children think about examples of actual initiatives and what each person can do.
The program will start in May 2021 and run by the end of August 2024, with the goal of leading to activities to protect the earth in the future, such as courses for elementary, middle, and high school students and courses for elementary school students during summer vacation. A total of over 13,000 children and students are
participating. We are currently holding eight long-term courses with Toin Gakuen Private Elementary School since November 2023.

The five Toin Gakuen students who supported the class actively suggested necessary preparations from the preparation stage, imagining the large number of participants. Furthermore, in the course, I saw five people working together and taking the initiative depending on the situation, and I felt that thinking and acting on one’s own in this way will lead to activities to protect the earth in the future. In addition, we hope that the children who participate will practice “active learning” in which they learn actively and have fun, so we do not just give explanations, but also visit each table as much as possible and look the children in the eyes and talk to them. , we conducted “driven teaching” to motivate students to learn.
Furthermore, we included a lot of unexpected content and examples that connect science with everyday life, and provided time for students to put it into practice on their own, so that they could learn about the SDGs while learning about the SDGs and fall in love with science. The children actively participated and asked many questions. In fact, I received the comment, “From tomorrow onwards, I’m going to take good care of my skin and use sunscreen properly,” so I think we were able to hold a course that will lead to the next step.
