[Machida City, Tokyo] Special exhibition “Regional Economy: Financial History of Machida in the Edo and Meiji Periods” will be held In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, we have begun to hear the phrase “revitalizing the economy” often through various media outlets. Here, the term “revitalizing the economy” is used to mean restoring demand and activating market functions by actively spending money. However, what does it actually mean to “revitalize the economy”? This exhibition uses the operations and mechanisms of the financial industry in the Machida City area, such as pawnshops in the Edo period and banks in the Meiji period, to explore the relationship between money and taxes such as annual tax and land tax. We would like to introduce a part of the history of the local economy.

– *About Machida City*
Machida City has a population of approximately 430,000 people and is located in the southern part of Tokyo, about 30 minutes by train from the city center. The area around Machida Station is lined with large commercial facilities, and the shopping district that has flourished since ancient times is still alive and well. If you move a little further from the station, you will find a lot of nature, such as Satoyama scenery, parks full of greenery, and farmland where local vegetables are grown. It is a city where you can enjoy both the convenience of the city and nature.
