[Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture] Special exhibition “Kunchi 390 Years Exhibition” will be held (September 19th to October 20th, 2024)

Nagasaki Kunchi, the grand autumn festival of Suwa Shrine, Nagasaki’s guardian deity, is said to have begun in 1634 when Takao and Otowa dedicated a dance (komai) in front of the shrine.
At our museum,
Starting with the “Kunchi 372 Year Exhibition,” we have held Kunchi exhibitions every year since our opening. In addition to folding screens and picture scrolls that tell the story of the mikoshi procession and dedication dance, old photographs and postcards that tell the story of Kunchi, this year’s dance towns of Kozen-cho, Yahata-cho, Manzai-cho, Nishihama-cho, Kojiya-cho, and Gin We will introduce a number of materials related to the seven towns of Yamachi and Goshima, and explore the 390-year history of Kunchi and its charm.

Price: Permanent exhibition admission fee (630 yen for adults, 310 yen for elementary, junior high and high school students)
*Free for prefecture elementary and junior high school students, Nagasaki Rekibun Tomo-no-kai, and campus members
The special exhibition is a mini-exhibition that introduces materials from the museum’s collection on a variety of themes, such as European and Chinese-influenced paintings and valuable historical materials.

Traditional dishes and decorations related to “Kunchi” will be on display at the townhouse, which is a restored merchant house in Nagasaki from the Edo period.

Valuable historical materials and works of art are displayed on the theme of Nagasaki’s history of overseas exchange. There was a Nagasaki magistrate’s office during the Edo period, and part of it has been restored on the premises. There is also a zone where you can enjoy learning about history and a variety of special exhibitions and events!
