Musical Adaptation of “Grave of the Fireflies” Announced for September Performance
Featuring Sho Hayami and Yui Ishikawa with a Live Orchestra
The musical adaptation of “Grave of the Fireflies,” a poignant story by Akiyuki Nosaka, will debut on September 17 at the Hyogo Performing Arts Center. This unique performance will combine live orchestral music with dramatic readings, bringing the tragic tale of a young brother and sister during wartime Japan to life.
Based on the literary work by Akiyuki Nosaka, which depicts the struggles of a 14-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister during the final days of World War II, this performance aims to resonate deeply with audiences. The anime adaptation by Studio Ghibli in 1988 received international acclaim for its heartbreaking portrayal of the siblings’ tragic fate.
This adaptation, featuring narration by Sho Hayami as Seita and Yui Ishikawa as Setsuko, will also include orchestral renditions of the film’s iconic score. Composer Kosuke Yamashita has reimagined the original music by Yoshio Mamiya, adding a new layer of emotional depth to the performance.
