◆Overview National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) will be conducting a study program in August 2024 as part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Project to Strengthen Overseas Network Functions to Promote Study Abroad in Japan (Southeast Asia).” For two days, on the 29th and 30th of March, we held an online study abroad fair in Japan for Myanmar students wishing to study in Japan and their academic advisors.
This fair aims to support students from the entrance to the exit of studying in Japan, and not only promotes studying in Japan from Myanmar, but also provides information on employment opportunities in Japan after studying abroad. Sponsored by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Myanmar Former Japanese Students Association (MAJA), and our university, JICA Myanmar Japan Human Resources Development Center (MJC), MJC Lower Myanmar Alumni Association (MJIBA), MJC Upper Myanmar Alumni Association ( This was made possible through the cooperation of Myanmar Human Resource Development Support
Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration Plat Form (hereinafter referred to as Plat Form).
This fair consists of three main contents: a special website, online seminars, and online group consultation sessions. Through the fair, we provided study abroad and employment information in Japan to 2,245 registered participants.
The special website provides information on studying in Japan provided by the host organization MAJA, partner organizations MJC and Platform, as well as the Japan Student Services Organization, the Inauchi Asian Students Memorial Foundation, and the Okayama University Japan Study Abroad Information Center (OJEIC).・In addition to materials and videos to promote employment, information on the 18 universities exhibiting from Japan was posted individually.
The online seminar was attended by 419 Myanmar people who wish to study abroad. At the beginning, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ichiro Maruyama of the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, MAJA Chairman Myokin, and our university’s Vice President Takayoshi Suzuki (in charge of international affairs and alumni affairs) gave opening remarks, and introduced the 13 universities including our university, and MAJA, MJC and OJEIC provided basic information on studying in Japan and scholarship information.
The group consultation session was held by 18 universities including our university, the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, MAJA, and MJC, and a total of 739 participants listened to explanations from each institution and directly spoke with faculty and current Myanmar students. I asked some questions. At our university’s session, two Myanmar international students enrolled at our university gave presentations on their experiences studying abroad, and participants asked many questions, leading to a lively question-and-answer session. Okayama University will continue to hold study abroad fairs and seminars for Myanmar students who wish to study in Japan, and strive to continuously provide information. Please continue to look forward to Okayama University’s efforts to strengthen regional core and distinctive research universities.

〇 Project to strengthen overseas network functions to promote studying in Japan (Southeast Asia) Okayama University has been commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology since 2026 for the project to strengthen overseas network functions to promote studying in Japan (Southeast Asia). We are proceeding with the project with the goal of increasing the number of international students from ASEAN by 2.7 times (103,861 people). Up until now, our university has been selected for the “Study Abroad Coordinator Assignment Project (Myanmar)” commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2014, and as a result of implementing the project with the goal of doubling the number of international students from Myanmar in five years. I was able to triple it. From FY2018, the name of the project has been changed to the “Japan Study Abroad Collaboration Promotion Project (Southeast Asia)” and the target area has expanded to include 10 ASEAN countries, and the project has been re-entrusted for five years from FY2019. Currently, we have offices in Yangon and Mandalay in Myanmar, Bangkok in Thailand, Phnom Penh in Cambodia, and Vientiane in Laos. Starting from this year’s business, in addition to these five locations, we will establish locations with Indonesia and Malaysia as our top priority countries, and will work on business activities to attract more talented ASEAN students.
