(Monday/Holiday). . Pitch black teddy bear Othello’s story The sinking of the Titanic in 1912. To mourn this tragedy and heal the hurt and grieving people, Deutsche Steiff created a special teddy bear with black mohair and red eyes. One of the 85 pieces released at that time, “Othello”, was sold for the world’s highest price in teddy bear history in 2023 and came to Japan. This exhibition will be the first time “Othello” will be exhibited in Western Japan. A ship model will be on display along with over 150 teddy bears, including limited edition teddy bears from around the world. Steiff created just 85 teddy bears with jet black mohair and red eyes to comfort the hearts of those grieving. One of these black teddy bears was auctioned at the prestigious British auction house Sotheby’s in 1990. It was sold for the highest price at the time, was featured in newspapers, and became known as the Titanic Bear. The person who made the successful bid for this Titanic bear was Susan, an American teddy bear collector. She named the Titanic bear “Othello.” Othello, cherished by Susan for the next 30 years, will be auctioned off again in the summer of 2023 at a special Antique Steiff auction held in Gingen, the town where Steiff is located, for 180,000 euros, the world’s highest price for a teddy bear.
