How many kilograms will we collect this year? ? Trash? or Treat? Halloween food drive campaign Let’s make Halloween in the SDGs era a happy event for the earth and everyone! October, the Halloween season, is a month to think about the importance of food, designated as “World Food Day Month” and “Food Waste Reduction Month.” Why not combine Halloween and reducing food waste to hold a fun Halloween event that will bring joy to the planet? Change from just getting candy for Halloween! In the new era of Halloween, consider people and the earth with a Halloween x food drive! “Food loss,” in which food that can still be eaten is thrown away, not only wastes food, but also has an impact on the environment, as the wasted energy for incineration contributes to global warming and saturates landfills. This is a major social issue that causes problems. In Japan alone, 5.22 million tons of food that is still edible is thrown away each year, which means that each citizen wastes one bowl of rice (approximately 113g) every day (2020*1) . While many people waste food, the number of people in Japan who are not getting enough nutrition is also increasing. A survey by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in 2022 found that 15.4% of Japanese people live in relative poverty, which is the lowest rate among developed countries including the G7 (Reference: Poverty rate丨OECD ). Food drives, which collect edible food and deliver it to people in need, are an important initiative that brings us closer to solving these issues. Why not plan a food drive to coincide with the Halloween event at a nursery school/kindergarten, school, after school, local friends, or shopping district? This is the fourth year of this campaign. The number of participants is increasing every year as attention to SDGs and food loss reduction increases. Once you have decided on a plan, register for the campaign and let’s all show off the results of reducing food waste! How to participate in the Halloween food drive campaign 1.
