Jimbocho Theater, a masterpiece theater in the town of books, screens good old Japanese movies from the Showa era, spotlighting films from various angles such as director, cast, and theme. This time, we are featuring Kinuyo Tanaka as a pioneering female filmmaker. Kinuyo Tanaka (1909-1977), an actress who has been active since the dawn of pre-war cinema, gained popularity for her people-like appearance and established herself as a star actress at a young age, starring in Japan’s first talkie film. After the war, she entered the directing industry and became the second female Japanese film director in history, releasing six films in 10 years, all of which were excellent works that captivated movie fans. This time, we will be screening all of the director’s films at once, and look back on the great filmmakers who dedicated themselves to the film industry, both as actresses and directors.
