Echizen crabs, which are raised in the rough waves and harsh cold of the Sea of Japan, are considered the king of snow crabs, and are a top-quality variety known for their sweet, firm flesh. This is the proof of “Echizen crab”. ■Echizen crab “Kiwami” is now available! “Echizen Gani Kiwami” is a top-of-the-line brand that debuted in 2015. A special tag will be attached only to Echizen crabs that meet the criteria of a weight of 1.5 kg or more (when landed), a carapace width of 14.5 cm or more, and a claw width of 3 cm or more. It is said that only about 0.05% of the total catch is targeted. Echizen Town has created a new special tag for “Kiwami” and is working to further improve its brand power. ■GI mark acquired! In 2018, it was newly registered under the Geographical Indication Protection System (GI) promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and the “Echizen crab”, the originator of branded crabs with tags and the only crab presented to the Imperial Family, was given a new national license. You will receive a “certification” of. *”GI” is a system promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to protect and pass on local products that have characteristics such as the environment and traditions unique to each region. There are 69 registered Echizen crab items, and 6 items in Fukui Prefecture. This is also the first crab in Japan. ========================================== ■Echizen Town, the town of “Echizen Crabs” ◎Yellow tag, birthplace Branded crabs with tags have now become a staple throughout the country. In 1997, the Echizen Town Fisheries Cooperative Association became the first in Japan to brand crabs by attaching tags to them before auction. This spread to other fishing cooperatives in Fukui Prefecture, and the brand image has now become established, with the yellow tag
representing Echizen crab. This yellow tag is called a tag, which is a proof of origin tag, and is attached to the base of the scissors on the right side of the Echizen crab. Furthermore, the port of landing is written on the back of the tag, and “Echizen Port” is proof of the authentic Echizen crab. ◎No.1 in Fukui Prefecture in terms of catch Echizen crabs are landed at four ports in Fukui Prefecture. Among them, Echizen Port accounts for nearly 80% of the catches. Echizen crabs landed in Echizen are delivered to shops in Fukui Prefecture and across the country. Of course, the one that is distributed the most is the local Echizen town. There is an abundance of fresh Echizen crabs, so you can always eat fresh and delicious Echizen crabs at inns, guesthouses, and restaurants in Echizen Town, and you can buy them in large quantities at fish shops. ◎Most crab fishing boats in Fukui Prefecture Echizen Town has approximately 40 bottom trawlers, both small and large. This is the largest number in Fukui Prefecture and plays a central role in Echizen crab fishing. However, the number of fishing boats in Echizen is decreasing year by year, and the problem of lack of successors is common throughout the country. Still, Fukui Prefecture’s pride in supporting kitchens across the country supports the port town of Echizen and continues to supply many Echizen crabs and other fresh Echizen fish. ◎Echizen Port is the closest port to crab fishing grounds The key to the taste of Echizen crab is its freshness. The port of Echizen Town is the closest to the fishing grounds off the coast of Cape Echizen, and you can take the snow crab you catch home alive. This is why Echizen crab is the top brand among snow crabs, and why Echizen Town is the home of Echizen crab, second to none. You can’t talk about Echizen crab without eating Echizen crab in Echizen Town. ▼For more information, please see the “Echizen Gani Brand Site” below.
