In the postwar values induced by SCAP, “moral education,” like that of Lieutenant Onoda, is a “ghost of militarism” to be avoided, and it remains a topic of persistent criticism today. The “Reprint Edition of Advanced Moral Education for Boys” published by Heart Publishing is also unacceptable from a postwar perspective. This moral education textbook for the advanced level of national schools (now junior high school grades 1 and 2) dates from 1944 and 1945, the year when Japanese troops were annihilated across the country and air raids on the mainland began. It is also intended for boys, who were subject to compulsory military service. This book’s strong emphasis on “winning the war” makes it more “militaristic” than previously republished moral education textbooks. However, there is one person who strongly recommends this textbook. It is the book’s commentator, Katsuya Takasu, director of Takasu Clinic. Dr. Takasu also tweeted to his followers, “This book embodies my entire spirit. Education is the greatest asset we can leave to our descendants. This is a book I want to share with my children now. Please read it.” What does it mean when Dr. Takasu says, “My entire spirit is condensed into this book”? In his commentary for this book, Dr. Takasu summarizes his experience as follows: When my grandmother and mother found out that I was being taught in elementary school that “the emperor did such terrible things, Japan is a bad country that invaded, and we must atone,” they were shocked. They said, “Everything that teacher says is a lie. We’ll teach you again!” and assigned me two excellent private tutors. What the two tutors said was consistent and convincing, but my homeroom teacher’s story was clearly flawed (the teacher was a Siberian prisoner of war prisoner who accepted Soviet brainwashing and returned to Japan early). I began to voice my opinion, saying, “Teacher, I don’t think that’s right,” and every time I did, I was made to stand in the hallway with a bucket and physically punished, told not to disrupt the class. As a result, I hardly ever attended classes with that teacher. Dr. Takasu was born in 1945, but to break the brainwashing of anti-Japanese education at school, he was assigned a private tutor and received prewar moral education. Moral education was a part of Dr. Takasu’s life, and he had a strong sense of responsibility to live by righteous conduct. To overlook someone else’s wrongdoing is to commit wrongdoing yourself. Dr. Takasu put the teachings of moral education into practice, and even knowing he would be physically punished by his teachers, he remained steadfast and continued to point out their mistakes. Dr. Takasu also stated, “The content I learned from my private tutor is included in this book exactly as it was. Reading this book awakens you. You realize that everything you’ve been taught up until now was wrong.” Just as Dr. Takasu was awakened by his private tutor, he encourages the postwar generation who received GHQ education to relearn the deep moral values inherent in the Japanese people through this book and awaken as Japanese people. In addition, the book’s appendix includes chapters for women that do not overlap with those for men, such as “Chastity” and “Father-in-law.” These chapters preach the feminine virtues of Japanese women that high school girls should master, but these, too, are incompatible with the feminist values that currently dominate Japanese public discourse. This book will be extremely important in re-examining the gap in values that exists between pre-war and post-war Japanese people and in considering what education for Japanese people should truly be like.
