Press release: August 29, 2025 To Members of the Press Opening today, August 29th! “Mika Ninagawa with EiM: Resonating Aquarium” An installation using one of Japan’s largest spherical aquariums will be held at PLANETS on the third floor of ATOA, a theater-style aquarium in Kobe’s port. AQUARIUM×ART atoa (Chuo-ku, Kobe, hereafter atoa) is hosting an exhibition of installation works by the creative team “EiM,” a group of specialists from various fields, including artist Mika Ninagawa and Hiroaki Miyata, producer of the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 theme project, from today, August 29th, through November 3rd.

RESONANT AQUARIUM Life floating in water, memories swaying in light, beings resonating with each other. Resonating Aquarium is an installation by Mika Ninagawa with EiM in which diverse lights transmit and reflect off countless crystals and spherical aquariums filling the entire space with the “breath of life.” Viewers are not just “viewers” of art; they become part of this world as “participants in resonance” with the light, sound, and underwater life. The first step is from appreciation to co-being. The resonant experience of having your own presence affect the space and receiving this as an echo will imprint a vision of a future known as “Better Co-Being” not just as knowledge, but as a feeling. Sharing the common themes of “light” and “resonance,” the two exhibits create a resonating relationship across different settings. The crystals are arranged using approximately 800 wires. A total of approximately 37,000 individual pieces are studded on each individual wire. Each wire contains four to five handcrafted pieces by Mika Ninagawa herself, and it took approximately six months from conception to production and exhibition. The Signature Pavilion, “Better Co-Being,” will feature approximately 400 wires, but this time the scale will be double that. We hope you enjoy this art experience, which connects the two interconnected venues, “Indoor Ator” and “Outdoor Pavilion.” Special merchandise exclusive to Atoa will also be available! Each of these items is designed to remind you of the moving experiences you felt at this installation when you pick them up in your daily life.
