This tanto was said to be Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s favorite sword, and is said to have been bestowed upon his vassal and longtime friend, Maeda Toshiie. The Important Cultural Property “Tachi (Sword) with the Signature Kuniyuki” is a sword made by Rai Kuniyuki, who was active in Yamashiro Province in the mid-Kamakura period. Rai Kuniyuki was a swordsmith who created many famous swords, including the National Treasure “Akashi Kuniyuki,” housed in the Sword Museum (Sumida Ward, Tokyo). He is known for his two styles of swords: powerful swords and slender, elegant swords. This sword is slender and has a high arch, making it a famous sword with an overall elegant and beautiful finish. Image

He was a blacksmith who served Tokugawa Ieyasu’s second son, Yuki Hideyasu, and was a master shinto swordsmith who was permitted to use the chrysanthemum crest. He is also known for re-edging famous swords that were burned during the Siege of Osaka. This sword is made using Nanban iron, which is said to have been the first to be used by Echizen Yasutsugu. Using Nanban iron gives the base steel a darker hue, enhancing its sharpness and the beauty of its blade pattern. The chrysanthemum crest can be seen on the front of this sword, making it an extremely valuable piece made by the first Echizen Yasutsugu. Many other famous swords will be on display at this exhibition. Please take your time to appreciate the works of the master craftsmen that the Nagoya Sword Museum is proud of.
