Slow Label, Certified NPO Press release: September 3, 2025 To Members of the Press Hijinx, one of Europe’s leading inclusive theatre companies, is coming to Japan for the first time! Public workshop held to commemorate “Wales Year 2025 in Japan” Ahead of the Japan premiere of the much-anticipated work “Meet Fred,” a method to explore diversity of expression will be demonstrated with performers from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

“Meet Fred” will have its Japan premiere at the BIRD Theatre Festival. This acclaimed play has received five-star reviews from The Herald and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Hijinx, a leading inclusive theatre company in Wales, UK, will be visiting Japan for the first time and holding a theatre workshop in Minato Ward, Tokyo on Saturday, September 28, 2025. This event is being held as part of the cultural exchange initiative for the Year of Wales and Japan 2025, promoted by the Welsh Government, and in collaboration with SLOW CIRCUS (a certified NPO called Slow Label), we will create a space where participants with different physicalities and sensibilities can enjoy free and improvisational expression.

Their representative work, “Meet Fred,” will have its Japan premiere at the “Bird Theatre Festival,” which will be held in Tottori Prefecture around the same time. Prior to that in Tokyo, a valuable workshop will be held where participants can experience the creative methods of Hijinx Artistic Director Ben Pettitt-Wade. Members of SLOW CIRCUS, a group featuring many performers with disabilities who garnered attention at the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, will also be participating. Through physical expression and theatrical games, participants will experience the joy of expressing themselves without fear of failure.

Following the workshop, there will be a presentation introducing Hijinx’s activities, as well as a Q&A session with participants and visitors. This session will be facilitated by Yoshie Kurisu (Artistic Director of the certified NPO Slow Label), who served as stage advisor for the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. It will provide a forum for dialogue where people involved in inclusive creative work in Japan and Wales can meet and share their practices. Participation is free, with Japanese-English and sign language interpretation provided.
