“Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.” Meanwhile, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was an ukiyo-e artist known for his masterpiece, “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō.” His exceptional composition consistently places humans at the center of his work, and his dynamic, lyrical landscapes captivated Post-Impressionist artists. This exhibition will feature a wide range of approximately 200 works from the collection of Nakau Ei, one of Japan’s leading ukiyo-e collectors, including masterpieces by both artists, such as Hokusai’s “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” and Hiroshige’s “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō,” as well as series shared by both artists, such as
“Chūshingura” and “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō,” as well as actor paintings, monster paintings, and humorous paintings.
■Highlights Themed, competition-style exhibits! This exhibition is more than just an exhibition. Each chapter has a different theme, and there is a comparative exhibition of landscape paintings from all over Japan by Hokusai and Hiroshige, as well as an exhibition focusing on the publishers who were essential to the distribution and production of ukiyo-e. The exhibition is presented in a thematic format, fully conveying the appeal of these two representative Edo period artists. Here are some of the themes and works: “The 53 Stations of the Tokaido” Showdown – Travel, Scenery, and Gourmet Hiroshige’s works, such as “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido: Morning View of Nihonbashi Bridge,” are well-known, but in fact, Hokusai painted seven works from the “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido” series between the Kyowa and Bunka eras (1801-1817), more than 30 years before Hiroshige. This chapter presents a comparative exhibit of Hiroshige’s masterpiece, “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido,” and Hokusai’s “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido: Picture Book Station Bell.”
