A beautiful fusion of the finest performers and creative teams! The third installment of the Mozart Opera Series, in collaboration with Meguro Persimmon Hall, located near Toritsu-Daigaku Station on the Tokyu Line, will feature a new production of the classic “The Marriage of Figaro.” Featuring performances by the internationally acclaimed Bach Collegium Japan (BCJ), an early music orchestra and choir led by Principal Conductor Masato Suzuki, and featuring top singers, this series is a fusion of various cultural and artistic disciplines, expressing the “Bunkamura” spirit. Its concept is to feature collaborations between world-renowned artists, using the comprehensive art form of opera as a medium. Following the first installment, “The Magic Flute” by Hiroshi Senju (February 2024), and the second installment, “Don Giovanni” by Hiroshi Sugimoto (February 2025), the world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, who will be working on “The Marriage of Figaro,” has previously designed the stage art for an opera at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Italy. This will be his first time in Japan, and is sure to attract attention. Expectations are high for the collaboration between the internationally sensible Iizuka Rei, who has been directing since the first production, and Maruyama Keita, who will be designing costumes for an opera for the first time. With an excellent creative staff, a world-class period instrument ensemble (orchestra and chorus), and leading singers from Japan and abroad, we aim to produce a production of the highest musical and visual standards. It will be a coveted performance not only for opera fans, but also for fans of architecture, fashion, and art. About Production This opera was created in the 18th century, but even in the 21st century, as depicted here, there are attempts to oppress others through power, and various inequalities and chaos. Even in such times, “love” always triumphs over everything! –Director Rei Iizuka The Count (a powerful figure) and Countess, his subordinate Figaro and his fiancée Susanna, an older man and woman who try to interfere with the happy young couple, and even a boy and girl in the midst of puberty have their own opinions! In the past, there was the class system; in the present, there are various power balances, and the chaos of people’s intentions all mixed up. This masterpiece, filled with the universal joys and sorrows of humanity that remain unchanged even after 240 years, is lovingly depicted in a “fictional hotel” featuring a motif reminiscent of The Capitol Hotel Tokyu (designed by Kengo Kuma). The Marriage of Figaro Synopsis (Original) It’s the wedding day of Figaro, Count Almaviva’s servant, and Susanna, the Countess’s trusted maid. Worried about Susanna, the Count, who has a crush on her, is plotting to revive her right of first night. Furthermore, Marcellina, the head maid, shows Susanna a document stating that “Figaro will marry her if he cannot repay his debts.” Meanwhile, the adolescent page Cherubino, who is intrigued by women, is fired by the Count and comes to Susanna for intercession, but the Count finds out and orders him to join the army. In another room, the Countess laments that the Count’s love has cooled, while Figaro, Susanna, and Cherubino gather to devise a plan to punish the Count. They dress Cherubino as a woman in an attempt to catch him in the act of cheating, but fail. The Countess revises her plan and convinces Susanna to renew her arrangement with the Count. Marcellina even goes so far as to bring the document to trial, only to discover that Figaro is in fact her and Bartolo’s child. Marcellina and Bartolo also reconcile and decide to marry, and the two mother-son weddings begin with much fanfare. During the party, Susanna delivers the letter to the Count as planned. As night falls in the garden, the drama unfolds. The Count successfully seduces the Lady while she is dressed as Susanna, but when he finds out what happened he apologizes to her. In the end, everyone forgives each other and sings the praises of love.

In January 2025, he will conduct his own revised and revised version of Mozart’s Requiem in seven cities during the BCJ European Tour. He served as stage director for the Tanglewood Music Festival (music director/conductor: Seiji Ozawa). He is a member of the directing department of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. After making his debut as an opera director with “Otowa no Tsubaki” composed by the late Yoshiko Hara, he has directed numerous operas, particularly “Gurre-Lied” at the Saito Kinen Festival (conductor: Seiji Ozawa), which received critical acclaim. His revival of “Madame Butterfly” at the Hyogo Performing Arts Center’s Opera 2024, produced by artistic director Yutaka Sado, in July 2024, and his highly acclaimed performance of “Don Giovanni,” the second installment of this opera series, in February of this year, are still fresh in his memory.
