(Original text below) Shibuya has always felt like a living mosaic to us – full of energy, stories, and encounters. With this project, we wanted to capture those everyday sparks of life at MIYASHITA PARK in pixel form, so visitors can discover familiar moments from a new angle. ■eBoy eBoy is a group consisting of Kai Vermeer, Steffen Sauerteig, and Svent Schmital. Formed in Berlin in 1997, they are currently based in Los Angeles and Berlin. He has collaborated with a variety of companies, including Adidas, PlayStation, Renault, and Google, and in recent years has worked on the artwork for the Japanese version of the Louis Vuitton Travel Book and the cover visuals for Yuzu’s new album “YUZUTOWN,” released in 2020. The basic idea driving eBoy is to use new “digital tools” and new “media.” Working directly on a “screen” allows him to manipulate “pixels.” As modular system environments evolve, complexity ultimately creates rich artwork. https://www.eboy.com/ ■Shibuya Pixel Art

Over the past seven contests, participants have included people from various countries and generations, both professional and amateur. A total of 4,759 entries have been submitted, with over 1,000 pixel artists taking part. Every year, the world’s leading pixel artists and creators serve as judges for the open contest held on Instagram and X, attracting attention from pixel artists and pixel art fans worldwide. The event, held every September, is based on the philosophy of “using the city as a stage, where everyone can play a leading role and repeat experiments.” By installing works by contest winners and invited artists throughout the city, the event explores the possibilities of pixel art while engaging the public, with the aim of developing and popularizing the art form. This year’s event, held on September 21st, will be themed “Everyday Life with Pixel Art,” and will bring together over 160 pixel artists and live performers at Shibuya Stream Hall, directly connected to Shibuya Station. Popular artists from Japan and abroad, including those from the United States, Russia, China, South Korea, and Taiwan, will exhibit and sell their works, as well as hold talk shows, game tournaments, and live music performances.
